Early this morning B. went into the hospital with stabby abdominal pain which turned out to be...you guessed it... appendicitis. Yes, he had his appendix out less than a month after I did. I guess that means we're even? or something?

I got up very early, drove back from area-around-work, and spent most of the day in the hospital until B.'s parents returned and I crashed in the late afternoon. Mostly I was cold from not showering and wearing yesterday's work dress (and the hospital was very air conditioned) but also hungry and tired. I wish I had been there when B. went into surgery (stupid long commute) but I was glad his parents were there, and I was there when he got out.

The surgery went well, no complications. Unfortunately B. had a hard time in recovery and the first couple hours in the room weren't great. He doesn't react well to pain medication/anesthesia, his mom has similar issues. He did get much better (world of difference between 11am and 1pm) and checked out around dinner time. He'll be fine although the next couple of weeks will be hard on him.

I'm taking tomorrow off from work to help out (not the best time, but when is it a good time for emergency surgery?) and then back to work on Thursday. Poor B.

Tuesday night I had horrible pain in my abdomen. It started out as what I thought was stomach pain, but then was lower and more intense. I didn't finish the last half hour of roller derby practice so P. drove me to my aunt's. Then she got me tea and toast. :)

I tried to sleep but it didn't work. Called my cousin who's a nurse, she thought it might be a burst ovarian cyst? Took a bunch of OTC pain reliever and used a heating pad and fell asleep around 2am.

Wednesday I went to work in the morning and had a doctor's appointment back where I live in the afternoon. They did a test and said I had a UTI.

Now, I've had 4-5 UTIs before. They have all felt similar and nothing like this. I didn't have the urge to pee all the time and the pain was different, in a different location, and much more intense. But they prescribed me antibiotics and they helped.

Thursday morning I went in for a follow-up appointment. They drew some blood and gave me a CAT scan. I was feeling better so intended to go to work in the late morning or early afternoon.

The CAT scan showed appendicitis! And I had to go *right over* to the hospital for surgery. It all happened really fast. B. met me at the hospital. I've never had surgery (other than my wisdom teeth out in the dentist's office) and was nervous.

But I had the surgery. It was fine, no complications. My mom drove down and was there when I got out of surgery along with B.'s dad and brother. I spent a long time (over an hour and a half) in recovery because it was for them to find me a bed. I'm seeming to recover well and was checked out tonight.

From my appointment this morning until my discharge from the hospital was exactly 12 hours.

Guess I'm not going in to work tomorrow either.

On the one hand it would have been nice if this had happened when I had paid sick time. On the other time I'm really glad it didn't happen during vacation last week.

I'm sore now, but not in too much pain. B. is out getting my prescription. I suspect I'll be going to bed soon.

So there was a con and it was fantastic. And then back to rl and it has been a week of catch up. Even though I'm sort of caught up, I still feel behind. At least for life in general since the kitchen is a mess and I need to do laundry (and watch SYTYCD). But last night there was "emergency" Peking duck, and tonight there were cards and swing dancing with the boys (D., durdge, and B., Jem is out of town for work).

Unfortunately I'm also feeling nauseous and emotional. Not enough that I think I will actually throw up or cry, but close. I didn't want any dinner (delicious stir-fry) or dessert (and you know I'm sick when I pass up freshly baked chocolate chip cookies). I think the crying might be related to low blood sugar because I haven't been eating? I did have some water crackers and those were fine, but food? Um, no thank you. Ew.

I was planning to do laundry and grade exams tonight, but I think I am going to watch a little tv and go to bed early.

And probably skip the gym tomorrow (which is sad because I didn't go last week. I did make it on Tues. and am super sore so I was looking forward to getting back to my normal routine.)

Ug. At least we're quickly moving towards the 20th c. in class. We start Realism and Impressionism tomorrow and I can teach that with my eyes shut. I know there are people whose favorite period is the 18th c., but I'm not one of them. We moved through it pretty quickly.

Things are not so great here in sick apartment. We're on day 9 of the head cold, day 3 of laryingitis, and day 2 of D. taking off work (he is currently asleep in bed). After over 2 days of not talking I think I have enough voice for lecture tonight, but we will see. We're getting better, but it is slow going. The worst is the coughing which is keeping us from sleeping well and giving me a sore diaphram. But the coughs are not especially deep or scary so I don't think we have a lung thing. And the mucus is clear-to-yellow so no sinus infection either. It just seems like a long time to get rid of a virus.

I got D.'s headcold and now am stuffy and headache-y and miserable (and clearly also whiny). I couldn't really sleep last night so I got up early (I guess that was good). I'm going to teach tonight, but it is going to suck. Blech. Back to grading exams, double blech.
