My mom is in town this weekend! *hearts* I picked her up from the airport on Friday.

Today D. went downtown to run the DC Challenge and get a haircut. Mom and I went to the nursery and bought roses for the front yard, and lilac bushes (purple and white), and hydrangeas for the backyard. Then we dug holes, planted things, and I mowed the front yard. I got sunburnt.

Tonight was my trapeze show! I didn't do the trick I had hoped to get to at the beginning of this IFW (8 week trapeze class), but the show was tons of fun. I did my trick, made my catch, and had a great time! False eyelashes stayed on, always a plus. Tired now.

I think we're going to try to see the Georgia O'Keeffe show at the Phillips tomorrow. :)

Then I'm dancing in flash mob at Dupont Circle. Local people interested can come by at 1pm (or a couple minutes before). The performance features the DC Cowboys. It's ABBA and should be awesome.

You know things probably haven't been going so well when you're checking your email and get the following message from your mom (who can see if you're logged into chat):

Hi, you are up early!! what is happening today?

Leaving my valentine this weekend for another, considerably younger man, my nephew Jacob (age: 11 months). My mom is at my sister's for the weekend so I'm heading down too. Monday my mom is flying home and my sister's childcare fell through so I am taking care of the baby.

My mother on the phone discussing this plan:
mom: so you know you'll be alone with the baby *all day*
me: yes, I understand, I think I can keep the baby alive for 8 hours
mom: and you'll need to play with him
me: yes, play with him, feed him, change him, these are pretty much baby-care basics
[note: I've helped take care of my nephew since he was 2 weeks old, and my sister and I are close, I'm up on What The Baby Is Doing Now]
mom: your sister will have her phone on all day
me: that's great, I'm sure we'll be fine
mom: well you're coming a day or two early right, so at least we can show you everything
me: yes, I really think it'll be fine mom. Thanks for all the faith in me.

I think grandma would rather stay and take care of the baby than head back home to work. Perfectly understandable :)

We had a great weekend with everyone! Friday we drove to Mt. Vernon, OH to stay with my cousins on my mother's side, to see Patrick (3) and new baby Joslin (8 weeks?). Melissa, Dave, and Jacob also stayed the night and my parents came down to visit for the evening. We had dinner, toured the backyard, and celebrated my dad's birthday.

Saturday morning after Jason's homemade cinnamon rolls (omg does everyone else's husband in my family cook except mine?) we drove to Athens OH to see my dad's side of the family. It was a joint celebration of my cousin Jon who is graduating from college and my cousin Dan who is graduating from highschool. Jon is a fine arts major (ceramics) so we got see his senior show. His work is really interesting and I'm curious to see how it develops during his artist's program in Appomatox VA next fall. We got to see almost all of the family and it was very busy but lovely. When it got overwhelming I went and hung out with my sister mother who was minding the baby in a quieter room. (I commandeered Jacob at my cousin's, but my mother totally took him over on Saturday.)

We spent Saturday night at my aunt's house in Columbus (D. was pissed we had to drive north again) and drove back Sunday.

It was intensely social which was exhausting, but so nice to see people for celebratory reasons (the last two times I saw the Ohio part of the family were for my grandparents' funerals). Also babies!!!

some baby pics! )

Yesterday I finished my grading and drove down to my sister's. My mom flew down as well so we all spent mother's day together. Today is my sister's first day back to work after her maternity leave (she only got 6 weeks at 60% pay, my brother-in-law got one week). So mom and I are on baby duty. Luckily Jacob will take the bottle from "grandma" (my sister's breastfeeding). I've already been peed on and we spent some quality time looking at his mobile and the picture in the livingroom and the lamp. Right now mom is napping on the couch snuggled up with the baby and Lucky (one of the dogs). It's very sweet :)

One of my new favorite websites is Postcards from Yo Mamma. People post snippets of emails and IMs from their mothers. It is very sweet and very amusing. Funny how there is a semi-consistent mom tone :)

This is my favorite one:

mom and the kayak

* mom: I hated kayaking so much this weekend I used the F word on Dad
* mom: He kayaked away for awhile and I was lost
* mom: stupid me
* mom: don't use the F word unless you can find home
* mom: but he felt sorry for me cause I was paddling backwards at one point
* mom: actually, I found backwards more relaxing
* mom: but he thinks I was just incompetant

I haven't put anything there myself but here is a comment from my mother (after I told her about the site last week).

Hi, so it looks like it is going to rain Frid and SAT, so I will bring a coat with a hood, but it is going to be hot, so not too bad!!!
I am really hesitant to write too many sentences, or it may end up ON THE SILLT WEB SITE> so few words.. so should I call you when I land? So you have my flight info?Have you ever picked up people at Reagan?
let me know
