Hi! Still here. Still pregnant, now pretty visibly so. Baby thoughts are on the pregnancy filter, if you missed it the first time and want to be added just let me know. In general things are going pretty well.

Warning: there is sad part of the kitty story so feel free to skip or prepare yourself

Early this morning B. went into the hospital with stabby abdominal pain which turned out to be...you guessed it... appendicitis. Yes, he had his appendix out less than a month after I did. I guess that means we're even? or something?

I got up very early, drove back from area-around-work, and spent most of the day in the hospital until B.'s parents returned and I crashed in the late afternoon. Mostly I was cold from not showering and wearing yesterday's work dress (and the hospital was very air conditioned) but also hungry and tired. I wish I had been there when B. went into surgery (stupid long commute) but I was glad his parents were there, and I was there when he got out.

The surgery went well, no complications. Unfortunately B. had a hard time in recovery and the first couple hours in the room weren't great. He doesn't react well to pain medication/anesthesia, his mom has similar issues. He did get much better (world of difference between 11am and 1pm) and checked out around dinner time. He'll be fine although the next couple of weeks will be hard on him.

I'm taking tomorrow off from work to help out (not the best time, but when is it a good time for emergency surgery?) and then back to work on Thursday. Poor B.

Five Things:

1. I had a wonderful time at my 10-year college reunion this weekend!!! It was fantastic to see everyone and spend time together on campus.

2. Celebrated Father's Day by calling my dad (he and my mom were in the kayak), and playing "father's day olympics" with B.'s family. We played mini-rounds of ten different lawn games (croquet, lawn darts, horseshoes, etc.). It was fun!

3. B. and I had our anniversary Sunday night. We were going to go out but I was so exhausted from the weekend that we stayed in, ordered takeout, and watched The Hangover. It was nice and low-key. He got me lovely gifts: socks (relates to an anecdote the weekend we met), a dvd, and a guidebook for Las Vegas (I do love guidebooks, the planning!, the maps!).

4. I woke up at 4:30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep because I had such bad heartburn? Weird.

5. A poem for Monday.

since feeling is first

since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry
- the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says

we are for each other; then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life's not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis

e. e. cummings
I spent a long weekend in Cleveland at my youngest cousin’s graduation party/family reunion. I couldn’t afford plane tickets so my parents graciously offered to drive B. and I. It went pretty well despite 24 hours in the minivan. It was really nice to see my family and introduce B. and I had plenty of time to talk with my parents. I only wish that my sister and the baby could have been there.

Friday my parents ditched us to visit some college friends and B. and I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. B. was really thrilled and I liked it a lot. The permanent exhibition in particular was really well done. The food options and gift shop were disappointing, but we had a good day overall. Friday night we had an excellent dinner with family at The Greenhouse Tavern. I had a delicious veggie and farro fricassee. Sadly, we couldn’t order half a pig’s head for my dad who didn’t really believe that was a menu item and kept harassing the cute, tattooed waiter.

Saturday me, B., my mom, and uncle went to the Cleveland Art Museum. They’re under construction so it was a bit twisty and turny to navigate, but their collection is top notch. I saw some wonderful things!

Then we went to my aunt’s house for the graduation party. We stayed about two hours longer than I would have preferred, but it made my dad happy to have as much time as possible with his family.

Sunday we drove back. B. took a shift driving and my mom didn’t freak out (she’s a very nervous passenger). Mostly though B. and I watched West Wing episodes in the back seat. (On the way there we mostly slept.)

All in all a nice, yet somewhat tiring, weekend with family.

The kitty is having surgery today so please think healthy-kitty thoughts for him.

We took Socrates to the vet last week. X-rays determined he has mild asthma so he's on prednisone. He also has a couple abcessed teeth so he was on antibiotics for a week and now he's having dental surgery. He's not an old kitty (we think he's roughly 5) so everything should be fine. But anything with anesthesia worries me a little.

OMG snow! I stayed with my aunt Tues. night which ended up being good or bad depending on how you look at it. If I was home I would have had a snow day (yay!), but since I was here I ended up going to work (and getting paid, yay!). I really wanted to go home this afternoon, but even when the crazy snow had stopped at work (we were getting an inch an hour this morning), it was still going strong at home (I heard closer to 2" an hour, visibility at about a half a mile). So it didn't seem worth the risk to drive over the mountain so I'm back at my aunt's.

This morning I had a scary moment. My aunt's street wasn't plowed. You have to go up a little hill and then cross some railroad tracks. It was snowing heavily. My little camry got stuck with my front wheels on the tracks, then I saw the train coming from the left, the lights started and the railway thingy started to come down, so I threw the car (an automatic) into a lower gear and accelerated (but not too fast because of the snow) and it jerked forward and I cleared the tracks before the bar finished closing. It freaked me out; the rest of my drive was uneventful.

It's a good day when you don't get hit by a train.

Also my aunt (who keeps her house freezing cold, literally 55-58, which makes sense because she really doesn't have the money for oil, but is still really uncomfortable) turned the heat up to 65 for me tonight :) it's positively balmy!

( Dec. 24th, 2010 10:26 pm)
I have some time to myself this Christmas Eve. Thinking of things happy and sad.

Things I'm grateful for:
-my family, their love and support
-the chance to see my parents, sister, and nephew tomorrow, to be together on Christmas
-B.'s family, how they've accepted me and made me part the family
-wonderful friends near and far
-being able to see some of them next week at New Year's!

Things I'm sad about:
-my grandmother whose has advanced Alzheimer's and is in a nursing home. We got an update today, she has been working with a therapist and her walking is better. The Alzheimer's is advanced enough that she is no longer my grandmother; she hasn't recognized anyone for years. So we are content that she is getting good care. If she is walking more steadily there is less risk of her falling and hurting herself. We're trying to make her life as pleasant as possible, even though some times it's hard to know how to do that (other than no pain, obviously). I miss her.

-we're not doing extended-family Christmas on my mom's side this year (the side with the grandmother mentioned above). Schedules just got too crazy. My parents will do a little thing next weekend, but I'll be at New Year's. I see my aunts and uncle regularly now, so that's better, but I will still miss that tradition this year. My one aunt just had her plans canceled (by a man she was interested in and kind of dating, stupid boys) so she will be alone on Christmas. :(

-I'm missing D. pretty badly tonight. Christmas always meant more to me than to him since he didn't grow up with the tradition. It's a time to share with people you love and even though we're not together I still love him and care for him. And I have years of good Christmas memories with him. I'm happy to be with B. and I'm happy to be included in new traditions--his family's--and to share my family's rituals with him. But I am still feeling the loss of my marriage, and with the holiday that loss is more acute.

It's been a time of transitions for me and the holidays are all about tradition. They bump up against each other some times. I'm sure tomorrow will be wonderful and celebratory and loving. Tonight's just a little sad.

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate and love to all of you.

eta: I'll end on something happy. me and the Christmas tree! )

It's the same one as behind the cut, but here's a link to less annoyingly large Christmas tree pic!
I'm having my yearly "omg Christmas is when" moment, which seems kind of silly given that I've been doing some Christmas-y things.

Saturday we went to Strawberry Banke. I'd never been, it was really lovely with all the decorations and characters. Just a smidge too cold. My parents and B.'s family went (including B.'s sister-in-law's dad) so it was a nice holiday family outing. We had a delicious dinner at The Common Man.

Sunday B.'s mom invited me over for cookie decorating with her and B.'s sister-in-law H.. B. had to work and the other guys did other stuff (why? cookie decorating is fun!). I'm not much of a baker, so I tried one new recipe (lime and pistachio cookies). They were interesting, not exactly what you expected, a little like a margarita. Then I spent a long time decorating sugar cookies (christmas camel!). It was fun and lovely to be included. B.'s mom and H. are good bakers and I ate way too many cookies. :)

I worked late Mon. and Tues. so spent two nights with my aunt. Monday night I woke up at 3am with horrid stomach cramps. Had some cheerios, but that turned out to be the wrong decision and I ended up vomiting. It's been a long time (4-5 years?) since I've been sick like that and even longer since it hasn't been alcohol related (like maybe when I was a kid?). It was awful. I finally got back to sleep around 5am.

B. skyped with me and drove up after work. He made me breakfast and then after work we went out to dinner. It was really nice.

I'm really looking forward to Christmas morning and then flying down to see my sister in VA. I missed her over Thanksgiving and can't wait to see her and the baby.

One more day of work and I have a week and a half off! (Unpaid, but still, woot!)
My parents flew in tonight. Tomorrow we're all going to Gettysburg for a family reunion, should be lots of fun! Last year babies Jacob and Joslin were learning to roll over, and now they'll be running around along with Patrick who's turning 5. My mom brought me a bedspread for our guest bedroom (it used to be in my grandparents' spare bedroom) and shelves for the downstairs bathroom made by my Uncle Ted (who is awesome). Yay for more house improvements!

I've been reading and *adoring* Mark Reads Harry Potter. It just makes me so happy to see him loving the books. He's also shared a lot of personal details that the books have triggered. Most of these are really sad, but they make the blog feel like a community (even though I don't really read comments). Again, it's highly recommended.

From that blog, here is a super random clip from a 1989 Wendy's Training Video. Watch however much of the beginning you want, the OMGWTF comes at 3:30. I'm also a fan of 5:34. This blew my mind a little :) highly entertaining.

My cousin is bringing a youth group to DC next week. They would love food you can't get in Mt. Vernon, Ohio :) (Maybe thai? ethiopian?)

Where would you take a group of 22 to eat out in DC?

(They're staying near the Regan building downtown, but they have metro passes.)

Back from WV! It was fun to see my dad's side of the family! We spent a lot of time playing with my nephew (15 months). He's so exhausting cute! My mom helped me alter my belly dance costume with mixed results. I'm on my own for the rest of it. My parents and sister are spending the week vacationing together in VA. I'm bummed I have to work and can't join them :( The only bad part about the weekend was the sleeping arrangements. Let's just say D. and I didn't get much sleep and are exhausted. This is a problem because I have a busy week. (Still freaking out about the bellydance performance, for example.)

Some interesting ways to procrastinate on the internet.
In Camera interview with Lady Gaga. It's long, but interesting (hats! Marina Abramovic! Feminism! Random questions!)
In case we haven't talked about her, Marina Abramovic article about her MoMA retrospective and performance piece that just ended
The Seventeen Magazine Project in which an 18 year old girl applies the tips from Seventeen Magazine to her life for one month.
Quote: "To go with my "Bright Prints" look, I also got my nails done to follow the "Bright Colors" trend that Danielle, age 15, from Minneapolis speaks so highly of. She writes, "Whenever I'm feeling down, I can just look at my nails and feel peppy!" This is bleak. I wish Seventeen would suggest a hobby for Danielle so she didn't have to look to idle nail-gazing as her only source of joy."

It would be kind of cool to (but I don't think I should):
-go to Universal Studios to the Harry Potter theme park thing
-dye my hair blonde (history: was red for a few years in my 20s, now it's my natural brown, I switch between long and shoulder length, currently long)
-pierce something (but I'm not sure what exactly and that pretty much answers the question, doesn't it?)
-go to Montreal. I've never been despite growing up in ME, and living in NH and western MA. IDK I have an urge, but no budget
Spent the weekend in VA at my nephew's birthday party. It was lots of fun to see everyone (my parents were also visiting). The party was nice. He seemed to like the presents we got him, carrying around the shovel and water sprayer, using the rake on the carpet, and giving raggedy Ann and Andy big hugs and kisses/face bites. My sister really appreciated that we came. My favorite time was Sunday morning just hanging out with everyone on the deck.

pictures! )

Since it's spring it's now time to spend even more money on the house. D. and I got some lovely deck furniture at ikea (all wood! reasonably priced! attractive!). Of course they didn't have everything we wanted in stock (why do you have only 1 of this chair, we really want 2) so we'll go back again. We also want to buy a grill and an umbrella. D. ordered a lawnmower (electric, like we live in the future) which should come this week. Plans for next weekend include seeing if the hot tub works and picking up the yard. It's spending a lot of money at once, but it's all on things we should enjoy for years to come.

Daffodils and tulips appeared in our front yard. A lovely surprise. :)

I'm in week 4 of my 6-8 week skin thing. I was going to write a long detailed post, but sufficed to say. 1. it's slowly getting better 2. I'm still really itchy 3. my skin is gross, but in slightly different ways 4. I can't wait until it's gone.

Leaving my valentine this weekend for another, considerably younger man, my nephew Jacob (age: 11 months). My mom is at my sister's for the weekend so I'm heading down too. Monday my mom is flying home and my sister's childcare fell through so I am taking care of the baby.

My mother on the phone discussing this plan:
mom: so you know you'll be alone with the baby *all day*
me: yes, I understand, I think I can keep the baby alive for 8 hours
mom: and you'll need to play with him
me: yes, play with him, feed him, change him, these are pretty much baby-care basics
[note: I've helped take care of my nephew since he was 2 weeks old, and my sister and I are close, I'm up on What The Baby Is Doing Now]
mom: your sister will have her phone on all day
me: that's great, I'm sure we'll be fine
mom: well you're coming a day or two early right, so at least we can show you everything
me: yes, I really think it'll be fine mom. Thanks for all the faith in me.

I think grandma would rather stay and take care of the baby than head back home to work. Perfectly understandable :)

The family portion of the holiday was reasonably low key this year (at least for us). My parents arrived around 3pm on the 25th with the u-haul trailer.

bed drama )

So Friday involved a lot of disassembling/reassembling/assembling of furniture as well as unpacking and moving. There are probably some families who can do this without any yelling or snapping. That is not us, but it all worked out.

I blanked on the idea of Christmas dinner so I hadn't planned. Based on what we had in the house we had homemade bean soup and a spinach salad with bacon vinagrette. It was just the four of us and I used a nice embroidered tablecloth from my MIL and our wedding china so at least it looked festive. Afterwards mom, dad, and I went to DC to my uncle's to visit with some extended family while D. stayed home to do the dishes.

Saturday we drove down to my sister's. Baby Jacob is tons of fun. baby details )

presents, including ones with family memories )

who our furniture is from )

Sunday I baked biscotti (a Christmas gift for my uncle, my parents are spending the week in VA, then driving to the Upper Valley to have Christmas there), while D. hung out on the couch and watched SGA eps on hulu. D. and I got home Sunday night. A nice, short visit with plenty, but not too much, family time.

This week [personal profile] bayleaf and I are heading to tribecon and then on our New England roadtrip. :)

It is getting down to the wire with the Christmas gifts so I ventured out shopping today. It was not as crazy as it would be after work or on a weekend, but still not fun for me.

My major goal was to buy for the children: P. (4, boy), Jo. (10mos, girl), and Ja.(10mos, boy, nephew). I don't have a clue what is age appropriate, and that was very frustrating.

I started out in the bookstore, this was fine. Got some board books for the babies. Your Personal Penguin made me tear up in the store. I would recommend it for anyone that you love, of any age.

Also got an extended version of the book with the mouse and pancake that had recipes for things (like pancakes) and songs for the 4 year old after calling my mother (with a patient), my aunt (his grandmother, didn't pick up), and finally his mother to see if he had it. Also got something called PailPets for Jo (not like garbage pail kids which is what the name reminds me of). This was fine. Went to some other places, had no luck.

Ended up at Target for toys because I couldn't deal with the idea of going to Toys R Us. Thought I would get some sort of tent/tube combo for Ja since he's very into crawling/walking-while-pushing-something everywhere and could use some changes of scenery. Store employee (working in the toy dept.) tells me they don't have any. Later I find a whole aisle of them (wtf?), but all of them have licensed characters and are for 3+ so forget that. The whole toy dept. is organized by brand (aisle sub-headings are all logos), it was a little intense.

Also wanted a baby doll for the boy. Didn't think finding a doll for a baby under two would be a big deal. IT'S LIKE A STUFFED ANIMAL BUT IN THE SHAPE OF A SMALL HUMAN. Plenty of stuffed animals. Lots of dolls for 2+ that talk, suck, shake, pee, whatever. They all make creepy noises when you walk down the aisle past them. Ended up with a stuffed monkey, it's kind of like a baby (except not, because I fail at toy shopping).

Ended up getting a lego man head lamp (it says 5+, but he's an advanced mature 4 *shrug*) at HTO and a t shirt online for P. (he's into Star Wars and Wizard of Oz right now).

All the cool toys seem to be for kids who are 8. Can't wait for 8. (There was a hydroelectric kit that I wanted to get for my dad, a civil engineer, to play with the kids when they get to 8, but I decided that was too many years away.)

Still have nothing and no ideas for my mother, and need something else for my sister. Ideas welcome.

The beginning and the end of last week were great!

Monday night I went to a concert with [personal profile] bayleaf, [personal profile] trixie, R., C., and [personal profile] bayleaf's roommate whose name I'm blanking on. It was a nice, chill evening. We had delicious plates of meat at Red, Hot, and Blue, then headed to the university. An Berlin opened and was okay (although whenever they talked they seemed very sweet). All American Rejects were phenomenally entertaining, especially the lead singer with his sparkly, writhing, tight-pants-clad, audience-insulting, self. The sound was bad for Taking Back Sunday and it was getting late for a school night so we didn't stay through the set. It was really nice to go out.

We're not seeing my family next week so Friday I drove down to VA to my sister's. It was great to see her and spend lots of time with Jacob. At 8 months he's zipping around crawling, and walking while holding on to things (coffee table, someone's leg, pushable pooh bear train). He's so happy! Lots of smiles and giggles all the time. He gets a little whiny when he's hungry or tired, but then you feed him and he's right back to Mr. Social. We figure it's from Dave's side of the family. Melissa brought Jacob in to wake me up both mornings and it's lovely to be woken up by this happy, smiley baby trying to eat your face snuggle with you.

We hung out and ran errands. It's more fun to do them together, and a little easier for Melissa because I could entertain the baby while she did things like get measured for a bridesmaid dress. I found curtains for the guest bedroom at Target. They're not *exactly* what I wanted, but close, and reasonably priced. They're also lined which is nice since we're not heating that room right now to save money. Dave cooked dinner both nights, it was a really nice, relaxing trip.

We're having Thanksgiving at [personal profile] uschickens's and I'm really excited! The food sounds like it's going to be epic and D. is making his MIL's baklava.

Had a very nice weekend with my parents and sister (and family). We mostly did chores and played with the baby :) My parents were very nice about my crazy schedule and the fact the house wasn't put together and they didn't have a bed.

Activities:
-Friday morning trapeze, my parents came to watch :)
-Friday night curling (we were down 2 without hammer in the 8th and stole 3 to win)
-Saturday night Ravenchase (with zombies! Tons of fun.)
-Sunday afternoon got a flat tire driving my parents to the airport :(

House stuff:
-Fri. cleaned apartment with mom and dad, moved stuff to car; Sun. finished cleaning and moving stuff (including bikes) with D.
-got shower curtain, halloween candy, and bunch of home depot stuff
-bedroom: overhead light purchased and installed, bed put up, temporary curtains up
-livingroom: 4 bookcases put together, bunch of stuff arranged, dropcloth curtains purchased and hung (D. and I had a fight about how high to hang the curtains), this room is mostly done, just need to hang picture and mirror, install overhead light, and load bookcases
-diningroom: table in place, some boxes moved to attic, other boxes unpacked, really need to find a light fixture; we hate all the Home Depot options for this room
-kitchen: sort of put together (thanks, mom!), I just need to rearrange some stuff, also need to decide whether to massively cull stuff (might not be possible), convert coat closet into pantry, or revise plan for dining room
-basement: half is set up, tv stands purchased and assembled, big ass (50"!) tv delivered and set up, one endtable assembled, still need to deal with D.'s half of the room including bookcases
-no progress on office or guest bedroom

No more house stuff tonight, off to S. and J.'s to play rockband :)

We spent the weekend in Gettysburg with my mom's side of the family (well most of it, 15/17 family members were there). Since we have two 5-month-olds we opted for 2 cabins instead of tent and camper camping. D. and I did not rate a bedroom so he got the futon in the livingroom and I shared bunkbeds with P. who is 4.

Well just turned 4. We celebrated his birthday, his mother's, and my aunt's. Of course not all at once, but during three separate meals. Why have cake once when you can have it three times? Plus we had s'mores. I had them for the first time with Reese's peanutbutter cups instead of just chocolate. *GENIUS* people.

4-year-olds get up really early. And call out for their parents a lot. And when they're put back to be because no one should be up at 4:30am sometime they entertain themselves by singing. Full voice singing. P. is energetic, smart, and adorable. He is very into The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars (he's only seen the original movies). For his birthday he got an ax (so he can chop down doors and save people like the Tin Man, but he won't chop down trees because "that would hurt them".) He also got a "real" light saber and will do the Darth Vader voice. Adorable.

We saw some battlefields. I found it kind of hard to explain the Civil War to a 4-year-old. )

The next day we went to the outlet malls, but mostly we played with P. and the babies. They are just as cute, but ever so much more fun now that they're 5 months instead of 2 or 3. It was a really nice family weekend. We hardly got to see any of Gettysburg so maybe we'll go back next year. Oh and D. and I cooked! D. made french toast (they way his mom makes it) Sat. morning and I made chili with those corncake things for dinner.
