I feel like I just posted and I look and it's been over two weeks, when did that happen?

The painting is done in our condo!!! This is only possible because we had 11(!) family members help over various days. Our parents did the majority of the work, I spent a lot of time nursing the baby, and B. kept being sent on trips to Home Depot and to pick up lunch.

It's really pretty! The living room is mostly gray but with one big dark purple accent wall that goes up the stairs. Baby E.'s room is a mid-tone green ("Manchester Green"), and our room is very teal. The upstairs hallway is the same gray as the livingroom, and the upstairs bathroom we changed from brown to white. The basement is now light blue with a big dark blue stripe. (Rooms we didn't paint: the kitchen and downstairs bathroom.) I hope that at some point there will be pictures, probably after we move.

Right before E. was born I didn't go through a frantic nesting or cleaning phase, but I did get into reading about natural beauty products and started the no shampoo thing )

The baby's sleeping so I should be too. (I'm also posting occasionally on the baby filter, if you would like in on that just let me know.)

It would be great if we could teach Socrates to do this with the baby. (Socrates is sweet but not the brightest kitty so I am not optimistic though.)

Hi! Still here. Still pregnant, now pretty visibly so. Baby thoughts are on the pregnancy filter, if you missed it the first time and want to be added just let me know. In general things are going pretty well.

Warning: there is sad part of the kitty story so feel free to skip or prepare yourself

Oooh, Waltham MA is having a Steampunk City Festival this weekend. Looks nifty.

Presented by and benefiting the non-profit Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, the festival will feature over 1500 hours of compelling Steampunk entertainment. Some of the scheduled events include an author signing, bands, hot air balloon rides, a New Orleans style parade, a Civil War reenactment, Monster Defense 101, puppet shows, lectures, and bicycle rides. When an entire historic New England town goes Steampunk for one weekend, all we can do is look forward to a few days of promising weather and enlightening experiences.

More info here.

Saw Hunger Games!

Short answer: Awesome!!! One of the best adaptations I've seen. Recommended whether you've read the book or not (although slightly more if you have read it.) Looking forward to the sequel.

A few things I've seen lately:

1. Haywire
I'm not sure why this movie failed at the box office (rotten tomatoes: 80% of critics liked it but only 43% of the public). It was the best action movie I've seen and a pretty damn good just as a movie.

Things I liked:
-Brilliant use of sound, most notably the absence of sound. There were fights during which all you could hear was the noises and it made the scenes much more intense and interestingly intimate. In one part she's telling a story and the flashback has no dialogue. None from the characters in the scene and I don't think much, if any, voice-over. It's all pictures. I heart it.
-Realistic fight scenes. Not balletic, not beautiful, but convincing in a "this is how I would survive in as efficient a way as possible using whatever methods were at my disposal". They were messy and direct. She also fought "like a girl" meaning using her strengths to her advantages (my thighs are stronger than my arms too).
-Character development. I liked that the main character didn't talk much. She's a freaking assassin/special ops kinda person, why would she be chatty? Yet while being incredibly independent and (necessarily) ruthless she also maintained some normal (restrained, but normal) emotional and/or romantic relationships. Without it being cliched and ridiculous and sappy and sentimental. I don't think I've seen many female characters granted this level of respect. Also props to the actress who I believe was a fighter who crossed over into acting.
-She screwed up. While being incredibly competent (god so hot) and confident (also hot) sometimes things didn't go to plan and she couldn't outrun all 85 guys chasing her. And she would do smart, savvy things that made sense for the character. The writing was really smart.
-A subtle plot. Not everything was revealed at once! It didn't treat the audience like we're stupid! (Maybe this is why people didn't like it?) You had to pay attention and maybe think a little! There was some exposition at the end, but also blanks you had to fill in yourself *gasp*

I went in expecting a fairly entertaining, fun action movie and was very impressed. I doubt it's still in theaters, but would *highly* recommend. (If you saw it and didn't like it, I'm really curious to know why.)

2. A few nights later I watched a documentary on war photographer James Nachtwey. (Google him!) We have some of his photographs at work and they are often used for teaching. My boss lent me the movie, it was made about 10 years ago. It was fascinating to learn about this man who has devoted his life (at the cost of a fixed personal life) to his work and to bringing attention to devastating events worldwide. But 90 minutes of war in Bosnia, Rwanda, Palestine, Guatemala, etc., and images of incredibly poverty from Africa and southeast Asia, people living in trash heaps and next to railroad tracks, and starving children. It was rough going. One of his photographs can be incredibly moving so seeing film of so many of these situations was intense. It was a lot of human suffering to witness, even at such a remove. You may know some of his work--it was his images of 911 that were published in TIME.

3. This week I went to a talk by the Guerrilla Girls. (Well, one Girl). Feminist, activist artists who dubbed themselves "the conscience of the art world," they've been creating public works of art (mostly posters, stickers, and banners) that challenge sexism and racism in the art world since 1985. They wear gorilla masks and adopt the names of dead women artists to hide their identities. By the time I was in school they were already canonized (I've taught them in intro classes), so it was fun to see one of them present in person. My exhibition includes some of their posters and I tagged along the tour we gave Frida Kahlo this morning.

Roller derby endurance: up to 23-and-a-smidge.

Friday bought a car to replace B.'s that got totaled by the drunk driver. This was a stressful and emotional process (mostly for B., but a little for me too) and I'm so so so glad it's done. We got a Mazda 3, manual transmission (yay yay yay), and it's a pretty blue color. Much better gas mileage and more room than the Tiburon, even if it's not quite as zippy. Rides much nicer than my Camry though :)

LARPed this weekend. It ended up being beautiful weather and we were in a heated cabin (this plus hot showers made such a difference I can not even tell you). I had a relatively slow weekend, but so did a lot of people. Still a fun time though.

Initially I found this Geek and Gamer Girl Song Parody cloying, but it grew on me. Plus Seth Green! and Katee Sackoff!!! A cameo by a redheaded Katee Sackoff is well worth 4 minutes of my time.

Just dropping by for my own records. I passed all of 1st round assessments at the beginning of the month but endurance. But I'm making progress! As of last night I'm at 22.5/25 (in 5 minutes). Just 2.5 laps to go. Slow, incremental progress is still progress. That's what I'm telling myself.

I know I'm going to do the never-post-now-spam-the-list thing.

Whenever I hear this song (it's on the playlist during roller derby practice) I can just seen the Kirk vid in my head. (I wanted to write K/S, but it's really K/K.) Surely someone has created this, right?
Feminist Ryan Gosling has made my afternoon. :)

There's other stuff, but I don't really have time to write now. Short version: things are good.

We're going to see Phantom Limb's 69°S this weekend and I'm really looking forward to it! It explores Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1916 Antarctica expedition using 3-foot-high marionettes. It looks very cool.

Check out this fascinating background material!
Things have been pretty quiet lately, which I really appreciate. Work, derby, and the commute are taking most of my energy these days.

So here are some random links.

Animated desserts set to Verdi. Charming.

I discovered Elinor Carucci's photography this week at work. I particularly love the intimacy of her Closer series. Also: bellydancing! Oh and I love the one of her breastfeeding her two tiny new babies in the recent work section, and "Cherries I Ate By Myself" from Crisis.

Have you seen the story about the Louisville reverend with the secret? A little long, but worth it :)

Guard Llamas! They work (according to AlreadyPretty)

"Because North American wolves have never seen a llama, which means it essentially looks like A SPACE CREATURE to them. Additionally, llamas are totally badass and will defend an adopted flock in a most serious way. Including the spitting."

I'm hanging out with a cuddly kitty on the couch tonight. It is nice. Yay Friday! Gorgeous day today. Work was slow, but I had some interesting things to do. Had lunch with mom outside, that was nice. Yeah not really much of an update here. We're planning on a quiet weekend and I am *thrilled*.
