It would be great if we could teach Socrates to do this with the baby. (Socrates is sweet but not the brightest kitty so I am not optimistic though.)

I know I'm spamming. But there's The Desire Project.
"A documentary series about what women want and how they get it."

What a great question!

Happy New Year everyone!

Here's a very sweet news article about a couple participating in the Navy's tradition of the first homecoming kiss :)

There's other stuff, but I don't really have time to write now. Short version: things are good.

Things have been pretty quiet lately, which I really appreciate. Work, derby, and the commute are taking most of my energy these days.

So here are some random links.

Animated desserts set to Verdi. Charming.

I discovered Elinor Carucci's photography this week at work. I particularly love the intimacy of her Closer series. Also: bellydancing! Oh and I love the one of her breastfeeding her two tiny new babies in the recent work section, and "Cherries I Ate By Myself" from Crisis.

Have you seen the story about the Louisville reverend with the secret? A little long, but worth it :)

Guard Llamas! They work (according to AlreadyPretty)

"Because North American wolves have never seen a llama, which means it essentially looks like A SPACE CREATURE to them. Additionally, llamas are totally badass and will defend an adopted flock in a most serious way. Including the spitting."

I'm hanging out with a cuddly kitty on the couch tonight. It is nice. Yay Friday! Gorgeous day today. Work was slow, but I had some interesting things to do. Had lunch with mom outside, that was nice. Yeah not really much of an update here. We're planning on a quiet weekend and I am *thrilled*.

A drive-by post with links from Already Pretty. (Which I keep typing into my browser as "almost pretty")

A post about women looking and acting like girls. I quibble with some of the details of this, but I think the main point is interesting.

Who Is the Black Zooey Deschanel? And I quite like this article on how it may be limited by race and class.

I have things to write about like The Eagle! and Sherlock! Also, I got a haircut and my 2nd job interview for job-I-really-want is on Monday. But it will all have to wait because I need to go to bed. However, this was too great not to share.

Have you guys seen Nerd Boyfriend? I am charmed. From Already Pretty (also delightful) recommended by [personal profile] wavyarms. (I do miss D.'s sense of style, he has a nice one. B. has clothes that he wears. Which is perfectly fine, but less fun sometimes.)

Also I am feeling the need for a vest. Banana Republic had a cute fitted gray one a few weeks ago, but before I could marshal funds it went away. :pouts: Beyond Ann Taylor I'm quickly lost.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look?

I'm also having a strange urge for hats, but I think with a little time it will pass.

When I was in Maine I found one dress for MJ at the hippie-esque clothing store I used to shop at in high school. The only one in my size was a return with a barely-noticeable repair (seam fixed with off-color thread) so 25% off! Nostalgia and a discount.

But I still need something for the other night. Maybe I do just need to go shopping.

For Friday a cute little video on kissing :)

I did things this week!

-Went to a talk by Thomas Crow, a big name art historian, titled Girodet's "Revolt of Cairo": Chaos and Uncertainty as Principles of Artistic Composition. It was very interesting. late 18th/early 19th c. isn't really my period so I learned a lot. The part of it about Napoleon's appropriation of Islam during his Egyptian campaign was particularly fascinating.

-The next morning I got to spend some time with Thomas Crow while he toured the museum. I mostly tried not to look like an idiot :) It was neat to chat with him about the Frank Stella show.

-Thursday I went out to dinner with J. He's finishing up his degree after almost a decade absence. It's been great to reconnect with him. He's on a student budget and treated me to dinner at the dining hall where I used to work during college. It was very nostalgic :) Also one of my last chances to eat there since the building is going through major renovations soon.

-Then we went to "Pouring Tea: Black Gay Men of the South Tell Their Tales". It was a performance by Northwestern Professor E. Patrick Johnson. After collecting many tales of Black Gay Southern Men for his book Sweet Tea he decided to perform some of the stories. The men he interviewed ranged in age from 19 to 93. It was fantastic!!!

See the promo here.

One of the men, Countess Vivian, was born in 1912 in New Orleans. He stayed in his house during hurricane Katrina and still lives in New Orleans today. The original interviews took place before the storm and Johnson lost track of him, but you can see their reunion interview here.

The show was just picked up by the Signature Theater in Arlington so he should be performing in the DC area in September and October of this year. I would highly recommend it!

-then J. and I went to queer beers and were social (aka: talked to people who were not each other which is hard for me). I chatted with a couple very nice gay men, including a UVA law student organizing a drag show and one very nice woman who talked about the virtues of having attended her all-girl high school and how she is (very very) straight.

-Today I went snowshoeing for the first time with B.'s parents and brother and the dogs. It was the perfect day for it and really nice to get outside in the woods for some fresh air and exercise. We'll see how sore I am tomorrow :)

eta Kitty update: Socrates is fine after Thursday's surgery. He seems pretty much back to normal although we feel awful trying prying open his mouth to give him the antibiotics after dental surgery :( Luckily there's only one more pill to finish off the course.
I should probably post something with content, but not much is going on. It's cold, but nice out. I have horrid PMS. Work is going really well. I did laundry last night? Yeah, nothing exciting.

So links!

Lady Gaga's Telephone as an adorable vintage children's book.

Cee-Lo's "Fuck You" as an awesome sign language final (link from [personal profile] queue)

Oh, I thought of something. We needed a little side table next to the couch and so we bought this lovely mirrored one from Target. I've wanted a mirrored vanity forever, but I don't have the money or the space. Our office is kind of a periwinkle blue with a sage green couch and lots of glass and silver and it looks lovely. It makes me happy when I walk in the room.

On a whim we also got a shiny pig for our bed room. We've named him Zeus as he presides over everything. He makes me smile :)

Filament Magazine is hosting an erotic fiction competition.

Write the most fantastic, filthy, lucious, dripping, delightful piece of fiction ever. Your story needs to meet our guidelines and ideally suggest the theme water and/or be inspired by one of the following photographs (click for larger, but please note some pictures are not safe for work):

I think the pictures are inspirational!

But that's my general take on Filament, pictures are great (although some suit me more than others) quality of the articles ranges widely.

Not working on Fridays in the best (well, not paycheck-wise, but other ways). I slept in then got the car registered and inspected. I needed new tires so it was even more expensive than expected, but at least that's out of the way. Killed the time waiting for the inspection browsing and found some winter boots. Now I can get to work with warm feet and not worry about killing myself on the ice! They're cozy and purple (of course, I know, I'm predictable).

It's so nice to check some much needed errands off the list. It was wonderful to see everyone over the holidays, but I am a little done. I need a couple weeks to be at home and quiet (no traveling) to recharge. Tonight's plans involve me, the kitty, the couch, and the dvr. (Although I am looking forward to missp's b-day celebration on Sunday.)
