In short:

-[personal profile] afrikate and her awesome kitty S. are staying with us. It's really fun. I am a little bummed that they are leaving, but very happy [personal profile] afrikate is getting her new place!

-I now have 8 students in my class and we're past add/drop. This means I get my full salary. Awesome!

-We're doing Renaissance art this week. It's fun.

-Good thing I'm getting paid because I went to this woman's basement in Severna Park MD last week and bought two very expensive bellydance costumes.

-And then brought them to class and were told how much they did not fit properly.

-So I went back today with backup ([personal profile] afrikate and L. from bellydance class) and have 2 different, more expensive, costumes that I hope will be better.

-I am still undecided/ambivalent about performing in the class recital next week at Mem Sahib.

-Two weeks ago I did a 2-day Ravenchase in rural VA. It was pretty awesome. Especially visiting yogaville. That big lotus shrine out in rural Virginia. (We had to run around it looking for information to break our codes, not very yoga-like, still awesome.)

-We also spent way too much time in Farmville, VA. Yeah.

-Last weekend we went to Brooklyn to Come Out and Play.

-There were many awesome games. My favorite was one put on by the Disney imagineers called Unwritten Storybook. We were the elves (complete with ears) and had to join with other groups (royals, outlaws, etc.) to complete tasks (testing out the castle's defenses with a big ball and water balloons, "jousting" with balloons, archery with nerf weapons, etc.). After each battle or event we went back to these tables and filled in storybook pages with our own narrative (eg the elves went to the thief's forest and battled the fairies in an archery contest...) and decorated the pages with stickers and glitter! Games with art and crafts. We have a book. It was awesomely fun and they fed us a tasty lunch feast afterwards. Did I mention the entire event was free. Fantastic.

-We also played:
Shabbat-put! Olympic games, Sabbath rules. (Fun, funner if I had been the fastest, lightest, or strongest of my team.)
Cross My Heart + Hope to Die A game inspired by the labyrinth of Daedalus, set in a life-size maze. (Interesting. Lots of running and confusion, would have been better if the room hadn't been so hot. The maze "walls" were hanging strips of fabric.)
It Lurks in Gowanas. Solve the canals mystery before you're whacked. (A fun mix of using microsoft tag reader, walking to different locations, and a story told through youtube videos, with a little "chose your own adventure" thrown in.)

-Sunday we played The Time Traveler's Knife Brave time travelers take man's first tentative steps into the future, but before they can see the future, they will have to iron out the knots of the past. (Incredible concept, game play could have been streamlined. I had more fun than most of my team because aside from our main mission I was a secret cyborg. I had to meet other cyborgs, and together we brought about the cyborg revolution in 1965).

-The best part of Sunday was being in Green-Wood cemetery. If you're in the area you should totally check it out. Beautiful with lots of famous people buried there as well.

-This weekend I'm going to a family reunion in West Virgina.

-The next weekend it's con.txt (yay!)

-The next weekend is Adam Lambert, although I am only going to 2 of the 3 of the east coast shows that many of my friends are attending.

-The next weekend in July 4th.

-The next weekend is the end of my summer class and mid-July. WTF.

For You: The BP Oil Spill Re-Enacted By Cats in 1 Minute
Back from a Ravenchase race in Philly! We had a great time, even though it was 3 days of racing in the cold (long underwear FTW).

Coolest clue: we were given a black skull with a barely visible phone number to call and the marking 33 degrees. Calling the number gave us a clue and 33 meant make the skull hot (don't ask). We held the skull over a flame (other teams ran it under hot water in the starbuck's bathroom) and the black faded to reveal writing *all over* the skull. When it got cold again the black reappeared. We had to hold it in the fire, hurry and transcribe, then back in the fire, repeat. It was awesome! [profile] durdge and Jem have the skull now.

We also had some good clues that involved finding names in cemeteries (something that in the past has been traumatic see [personal profile] bayleaf and I in Savannah during GAR).

We spent half of Sat. in the Philadelphia Museum of Art! I was in heaven! (There was a particularly cool clue involving the bust of Ben Franklin and a patterned floor.) Then we went to the Rodin museum!!!

It was so cold that even bundled up it was hard to clue solve outside (my pens wouldn't work). So we spent a lot of time in bars, coffeeshops, hotel lobbies, and McDonald's. Not so fun. On the other hand we also had clues involving the LOVE sculpture and the giant outdoor thing with huge gamepieces (from monopoly, chess, checkers, sorry, etc.)

Frustrating clues:
-the first clue which was a million pages of text that we didn't think to take the capital letters out of (luckily we got a hint)
-the phone number one I screwed up because I can't subtract (we did think to call! too bad it was the wrong number)
-the St. Paul's one that would have been fine if we had had a better map of Philly
-the column one where we had to place letters into the colored arches of a medieval courtyard at the art museum (ask D. and Jem about this one)
-not being able to find Abe Lincoln outside and then having to move the heavy grate and lie on my stomach for the grabby extender thing to reach the scroll (yes, it was snowing at this time)
-the sundial one we couldn't even get close on because no one thought to have F=6

Good food moments: drinks (martinis and cosmos) and dinner at the Black Sheep Saturday, delicious Belgian sugar waffles at Bonte this morning, and fantastic Peking duck at the good duck place for dinner tonight.

Only could have been better if [personal profile] bayleaf and [personal profile] uschickens had joined us (and maybe been 20 degrees warmer)! We heard that GAR (Great American Race) is coming back this summer. It's going to be New England (DC to Martha's Vineyard*) Who's in?

*For those less familiar with Ravenchase: The Great American Race (GAR) is a weeklong clue-solving event. 5 of us (me, bayleaf, uschickens, durdge, and Jem) did the summer 2007 GAR which ran through the South. We drove DC to New Orleans via Richmond, Charlotte, Nashville, Savannah, Atlanta, and Panama City. We rented a minivan and solved clues in cities and on the road. It was awesome, and sweaty.)

I trapezed the last two Fridays.

#9:
Worked on split and got it about an hour in. Unfortunately there were only three of us so by the time it came to catching I was exhausted and couldn't catch it.

I blame my failing core strength on:
-not being in good cardiovascular shape and therefore having shitty endurance
-needing more core strength (maybe pilates in January? I don't know.)
-having a hardcore bellydance class the night before that focused on camels (spinal undulations) and snakes (body undulations that use a lot of obliques)
-not sleeping well the previous night b/c D. was back from his business trip and the snoring was intense. I woke up 4-5 times
-starting my period (during class, not fun, you know what else isn't fun? putting in a tampon in a portapotty)

I made progress on the trick, but didn't have the greatest class.

---
Then there were zombies in Princeton that were awesome and zombies in Richmond that were not.
Still, yay, Ravenchase!

Went today with [livejournal.com profile] insptr_penguin. She did awesome starting out with an accidental ankle hang. (It was really cool). Her catch looked great and would have been perfect if she had let go with her knees.

I worked on the split getting the different parts down, but not smoothly enough for catchable timing. I practiced wimpy straddle whip again and I think it was catchable. (Scout assures me that wimpy straddle whip is indeed a real trick done by professionals and not just the baby version of regular straddle whip.) Unfortunately Neil and I didn't catch it. The first time our timing was off and I didn't reach up enough. The second I brought my hands around instead of straight in front and I missed him by just a little.

The weather was gorgeous, blue skies and 70s (in November!) after a week of rain.
Oh awesome!!! You know you want to play. Cities include Richmond, New York, and Princeton NJ (although if you all wanted to meet in Paris I wouldn't say no).

Check out the Undead Invasion Ravenchase Halloween events!

This Halloween, cities around the world are at risk of being infested by hideous legions of the undead. You and your team of zombie hunters are the last defense standing between a world of puppies and fuzzy things and an apocalypse of unspeakable, brain-eating madness!

In addition to helping to repulse the zombie attack, you will also be competing against other teams of the living in a trial of speed, intelligence, and zombiestomping.

The History
The first fingers broke through the soil of a forgotten grave and our peaceful cities would never be the same again. Every Halloween, a select number of zombies are granted access to our world to survey the conditions for a full-scale invasion. You and your team of zombie hunters must make it clear that there will be no invasion this year and that this aggression will not stand!

The Enemy
You will be confronting a formidable enemy with no respect for human life, customs, or fashion sense. This adversary, however, has a weakness. The zombie scouts can only stay above ground so long as they are in possession of their official travel permits, another example of the unexpected bureaucracy of the Zombie Autonomous Administration.

The Means
Given the risk of infection that a zombie fighter faces from a physical confrontation with a zombie, your only recourse will be to outwit and your mindless foe and convince him to freely part with his permits. To help you locate the zombies and complete this task, Undead Invasion Central Command will distribute portions of the Book of the Living Dead.

The Victor
By combining your wit and will with this information, you will be able to locate and neutralize the zombie threat. The team that makes the greatest contribution to this effort will be crowned Zombie Stomping Champions and will awarded all of the commensurate perks. For more detailed information about the game, please refer to the official rules.

How to Play
Registration is quick and easy, we suggest a team of 3-5 zombie hunters. Once registered, you will receive updates and instructions from Undead Invasion Central Command. In the mean time, you can start learning about the Book of the Living Dead and zombie identification techniques.

That said I'm still super excited for our two-day Douglas Adams themed race this weekend with J. and A.!!!
We had a two day Ravenchase race this weekend. It was a great race although Saturday we walked *a lot*. One team calculated they walked 10 miles, it may have been close to that, we walked most of the time for 7 hours. We were very sore Sunday and I'm still stiff this morning. I also developed a large blister on the sole of my foot Saturday that burst Sunday during the race. It's not comfortable, I wonder what shoes I can wear to work today? [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf got shinsplints on Saturday that were so bad she couldn't race on Sunday and was google support. The name of the race was the "city of magnificent distances" (Washington), and they weren't kidding.

Some race details )

Last night was skiffy night, or as I call it in my head "Sci Fi Fridays 2008/Old School Version". Sci Fi Fridays 2005(?) was how we first got to know [livejournal.com profile] sanj, [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon, [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf, and [livejournal.com profile] lightgetsin (who used to have a much more difficult lj name), and eventually [livejournal.com profile] uschickens, I think. Anyway the basis for our friends group in DC and it's nice to reprise the spirit of them. This time around instead of watching live tv (BSG), we're doing old school stuff, Dr. Who, maybe some Star Trek, whatever people want.

Last night we watched two 1st Doctor things, An Unearthly Child and the Daleks. While the pacing was really damn slow 1963 style they were entertaining and we had a good time watching and discussing. Yay for [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon's hostessing. Next week I hear there will be Aztecs :)

Today we're heading to Annapolis to Ravenchase with [livejournal.com profile] durdge and Jem. We're really late since we should be there now (at their house, not Annapolis) and D. is still naked and dirty. (Well actually he's dressed in mildly smelly clothes, getting clean laundry so he will have something to wear after he showers). ETA, okay now he's in the shower (presumably naked and getting cleaner) so we should be heading off soon. The race is Monty Python themed and should be tons of fun! It's run by one of the teams we played against during GAR so it will be neat to see their clue-writing style. Unfortunately [livejournal.com profile] uschickens can't come because she's either still in NYC (in which case I'm sorry) or packing for Spain (in which case I'm less sorry). [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf can't come either because she's preparing for her mom's arriving, but we will get to meet her mom and that should be very fun (it's always interesting to meet your friends' parents).

Oh and tonight A. and J. invited us to Seder. I've never been to one to that should be fun as well. :)

D. and I did the Valentine's Day Ravenchase in Philly today. It was the perfect (February) day to race, blue sky, cold but not inappropriately so (30s), and only a little wind. It was a little like our very first Ravenchase together in Baltimore which was also freezing. The major difference being that ellen_fremedon was also on our team then.

The race was a nice mix of locations (public buildings, park, plaza, and commercial art gallery, no cemetery woo!), clue types (find the plaque, puzzles--including one monster 4-part clue with a varying backward Cesar shift that took us a bit to solve, dig in the leaves for stuff, and talk to the actor, actually also sing to the actor and then he took our picture in front of the LOVE statue, awesome!), and group types (us, a veteran team that's done almost all the Philly races, some couples, a family, a birthday party, and a monster bachelorette party).

This is the first race that D. and I have done together, just the two of us. I was slightly concerned, but we worked very well together and had a great day.

As an extra-special bonus we came in first!

We solved all of the clues without any hints and were the first to the bar. The race was very well written as all the teams came in around the same time (within a half hour of each other I think). I think we might try to do some more by this couple. They do the northeast so Philly, Princeton, NYC, etc.

On our way out of town we stopped at Jim's and got cheesesteaks. I had never had a cheesesteak before in my life, isn't that strange? Anyway, they were really yummy and set us up well for the drive home.
