We had a two day Ravenchase race this weekend. It was a great race although Saturday we walked *a lot*. One team calculated they walked 10 miles, it may have been close to that, we walked most of the time for 7 hours. We were very sore Sunday and I'm still stiff this morning. I also developed a large blister on the sole of my foot Saturday that burst Sunday during the race. It's not comfortable, I wonder what shoes I can wear to work today?
bayleaf got shinsplints on Saturday that were so bad she couldn't race on Sunday and was google support. The name of the race was the "city of magnificent distances" (Washington), and they weren't kidding.
Sunday they said they trimmed down the race because people needed to get home. They cut out one clue, the one that would have taken us to Iwo Jima. That seems far away and would have been a lot of walking so definitely cut out at least 45 minutes to an hour.
The clues were fun and we went to a lot of neat (and some familiar) places. Saturday there was a clue that mentioned the Mestrovic statue in front of the Croatian embassy and then Woodrow Wilson's house and then the textile museum. Luckily we knew right where those were. We also got to interact with actors. One woman asked us for directions to the White House on her map of Baltimore. She acted confused for a while and then gave us a clue. She said that if people ignored her then she should let them wander around for a while. We also had to find "Union Station sings trains" which ended up being a guy singing about trains in Union Station.
Sunday was a little frustrating in that I spent 3 hours on the phone. I was calling to try to get a place in this bellydance festival. It's first-come first-serve, so they open the phone lines and you just keep calling. I got busy signals for 3 hours straight (and so did everyone else who helped call when we were walking or on the bus or whatever), and then intermittently for the next hour and then I gave up. So frustrating. At least I gave it a shot.
The locations yesterday were really cool. We went to the Building Museum, Portrait Gallery, National Geographic Society, Sculpture Garden, Congressional Cemetery, and the National Cathedral. The clue said to metro to Woodley and then walk (up the hill!) to the cathedral. We thought that didn't sound very efficient so we took the bus up. It was neat, the clue started in the observation gallery 7 floors up and then led us to a statue of George Washington in the garden.
We ended up winning the golden monkey statue by 14 minutes so the bus ride made the difference! We only had to call in on two clues (one each day) that we couldn't solve. Luckily D. got the logic of the color-coded chain clue almost instantly, I don't know if I would have been able to solve it.
