Yesterday I went outside of my comfort zone and took a hip hop class with durdge and Jem.

The instructor was excellent even though the class was very full. We learned a lot of choreography in a very short amount of time. It was fun, but took all of my concentration and I don't look very good (not that I'd expect to in my first class ever).

We practiced a little ourselves later (seriously, a lot of choreography, some of it decently complicated). D. (who hurt his ankle) acted as dj/metronome. On one of the moves he said I looked like "an elf bouncing in a meadow". I really don't think that's the intended effect.

So locals, if you want to try hip hop it's Sundays and you can't look any sillier than I do.

If you're in the DC area Joy of Motion is holding open houses this weekend. I love Joy of Motion, I've been taking classes for a couple of years and now I'm a work study. If you're curious you should go check it out.

Sunday was really nice. In the morning I went to catch the last few hours of women's challenge. That night D. and I went to see Jem's Latin Hip Hop performance as part of JOM's winter showcase. The show was great and Jem was fantastic!!!

Today was not so great. D.'s lower back started to hurt at work while he was washing his hands. The pain was so intense he had [livejournal.com profile] durdge take him to the hospital. He was diagnosed with a lower back sprain. I bused, metroed, and walked to their work to pick up the car and met them at the pharmacy. (Thanks [livejournal.com profile] durdge!)

D. got home and spent some time on the living room floor. It was very, very painful for him to get up and move into the bedroom. Now he's in bed with pillows, ice packs, heat thingies, a variety of prescription pain medication, food, and books. It is some of the worst pain D. has ever experienced and from my view at times his expression looked a lot like the women you see on the discovery channel giving birth. He is hurting a lot and I'm sure would appreciate any signs of support.

Hopefully he will feel significantly better in a day or two although I'm sure full recovery will take a while.

I found out that I am indeed registered to vote (because duh I voted 4 years ago and why would I need to re-register? I think I thought that I needed to register for this election, but voting doesn't really work that way right? You just need to be registered in general and as long as you don't move I believe you're set.) For some reason I forgot that I had voted previously, perhaps I just can't believe we've lived here (and in the same apartment!) for four whole years. The website says I'm registered so I'm going with that.

So I should be able to vote in the primaries, but tomorrow I also have my final recall day for jury duty. What to do what to do? (Okay the answer is probably get up at ass o'clock in the morning to vote and be on time for jury duty.)

I'm kind of excited now.

In other news ballet class yesterday was awesome. Note that it was my first ballet class in 13 years. My bellydance teacher recommended it as a way to work on my upper body posture.

I came in frazzled because I was running late, could not find parking due to an anti-Scientology protest (who wakes up and says "my cause is hating the scientologists"?), and hadn't sewn the elastics onto my newly purchased ballet slippers. Fortunately [livejournal.com profile] insptr_penguin and her pink thread came to the rescue! Class went pretty well. I was able to follow along on all but a couple of the across the floor exercises. It felt pretty quick, somewhat familiar, and quite good.

I felt considerably less self conscious after we started and of course because [livejournal.com profile] insptr_penguin was there for moral support. (PS she can touch the toes of one foot and put the other leg straight up in the air, like a split while standing up, it looks really cool. My leg is closer to a 90 degree angle rather than 180.) I am only mildly sore this morning (sore enough to want to stretch but not to take any pain reliever, perhaps I will go to yoga tonight?) I think I'll probably go to a drop-in ballet class on a semi-regular basis.

Random stuff from last week:

-at work ended up in our extended storage area and the people who run it are also doing some work for Jim Henson and guess what was out on the shelf? The original Bert and Ernie!!! So cool!!! I wish we had been able to poke around the boxes but no luck.

-went to my first ever modern dance class with J. Thursday. A lot of fun, but a challenge. The stretching and warm-up were great. The choreography went pretty fast but I faked it and had a good time.

-spent my first weekend in two months at home with Denis. It was nice to just have a quiet restful couple of days. (Bonus he made delicious potato and leek soup (with spinach and bacon) that we have been devouring all weekend.)

-thoughts on some random books: Really liked Omnivore's Dilemma highly recommend it, made me feel awesome about my CSA membership (especially after last week's delicious peaches). I finally finished Blindsight by Peter Watts. It was excellent, harder sci-fi than I usually read, but really interesting characters and great aliens.

-and movies: Silent Hill was better than I expected (good imagery if you ignore the "plot"), Shopgirl was worse than I expected (Lost in Translation without the chemistry or character development), and The Prestige was just as good as I expected (and I wasn't spoiled, nifty casting Bowie as the Croatian Tesla).
