Yeah, this thing sounded horribly frightening and was spreading like wildfire through the blogosphere a few days ago. It sounded awful to me, but because it was really hard to get any sort of definitive "official" news source on it, I was trying to withhold my judgement until further information about the reasoning behind the bill became clear.
Today I heard about this (http://democracyforvirginia.typepad.com/democracy_for_virginia/2005/01/eternal_vigilan.html), which appears to be a letter from Cosgrove to help clarify what he meant. I think it addresses a lot of important points. I'm still digesting it, but I figure I should share it.
Please tell me this bill hasn't passed already. VA isn't as conservative as some places in the South, I feel, but oh my God, it seems like their legislature is just totally dominated by insanely zealous consequence-blind Christian fundamentalists...
Did you read the link I posted in my comment above? I think it changes things quite considerably. I'm still not sure it's a great idea, but at least the expressed intentions are nowhere near as sinister as the original wording of the bill made it out to be, and it sounds like he's working on getting it changed to be much better defined.
Yeah, I read that after I posted. I thought at least that the legislator's letter was very thoughtful, and I'm heartened that he intends to change the wording of the bill (which to me was very suggestive of miscarriages and abortions being included - I've never heard a baby referred to as a 'product of conception').
