It's my first day full-time at WCMA for the summer. I'm not sure if the curator I'm working for knows exactly what to do with me. I went to the library this morning and then Jon (another staff person) needed me to accompany him on a 3 hour trip to return some art to a pair of artists (you always need 2 people in the car when transporting art so there's someone to stay with it if the car breaks down). That was a nice trip and now I'm eating lunch. He mentioned I should come to a meeting this afternoon, which actually sounded interesting, but then my boss said that interns don't usually go to that meeting so no meeting for me. I don't really have anything to do until my boss gets out of the meeting except for lunch, so hope it doesn't go too long. I hate having nothing to do at work, it's awkward.

Tonight Denis and I are going to a BBQ thrown by the director of the grad. program to celebrate the end of dry runs. Each second-year student presents their qualifying paper at a symposium graduation weekend, and previous to that they have 3 dry runs with the two directors of the program (Mark and Marc), one second year student, one first year student, and one other professor. This is a huge committment as Marc and Mark attend 36 dry runs, each running 1-2+ hours from March until late May. It's also a scheduling nightmare, but everyone ends up being a good public speaker with a very polished paper, effective slides, etc. So the BBQ tonight will be fun. Denis made baklava Saturday (Melissa and I helped) for it, which should go over well. Sunday I had to do some major kitchen cleaning, because there was a lot of sticky sugar syrup everywhere. I hope I staved off any ant problem we might develop.

Oh, Jon was telling me that the last time he visited these artists they were talking about acquisitions and the phone rang and they let the machine pick it up. They could just hear the message and it was a man with a British accent trying to convince the artists to work with him on this project. This went on for a while and then the artists (they're husband and wife and their names are escaping me) started giggling and said that the man on the phone was Peter Gabriel. Aparantly he wants them to work with him on a video and they turned him down because it would take a year during which they couldn't work on any other projects. Jon couldn't believe that they didn't pick up the phone (he's a big Peter Gabriel fan) and they said that it was a little wierd hearing Peter Gabriel cajoling them on the answering machine and not picking up. Thought Chris in particular might enjoy the anecdote.

Ok, back to trying to find something to do.

I do indeed! Thanks for sharing!

I agree. It's maybe not as bad as having too much stuff to do at work, but it's still uncomfortable. I think it can be a common problem when you first start working somewhere, especially when you're coming on as additional help rather than filling a specific vacancy; when something is not getting done, it's easy to tell someone to go and do it, but I think people in managerial positions find it harder to think of how to use new help to expand on whatever they're doing rather than just sustain it. Hence the sitting around waiting for them to figure out what to do with you. I hope that the curator figures it out soon so you can start doing interesting things!

Have fun at the BBQ, and we're looking forward to seeing you soon!

Lastly: sticky sugar syrup. yum. =)
