Last day at the Law Enforcement Museum. They were so sweet taking me out to Rosa Mexicana (great guacamole) and buying me some cute NLEM stuff (rubber police ducky!).

D. is back after a week at Berkeley capped by an unanticipated night spent in the Chicago airport. He was supposed to get home last night around 1am instead made it today around noon (without sleep). After a nap and shower he is feeling much better.

Movies:
Stardust
So sweet and so much fun. One of my the best page to screen adaptations that altered the plot but stayed true to the spirit of the story.

Little Children
Have you guys seen this? Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, some hot guy that looks somewhat familiar, and some other (significantly less attractive) red-headed guy that looks really familiar (always cast as the friend I think). Anyway really well done. Some sterotype things that bothered me at the beginning but nice character study.

Books:
Nightwatch series by Sergei Lukyanenko (Night Watch, Day Watch, Twilight Watch).
These were a lot of fun, nice discussion of moral ambiguity and good development of the main character (plus sparkly magic.) These were very nicely visual for me. Thanks to D. for the rec.

TV:
Mad Men
This show is awesome. Have you seen it? AMC Thurs. nights and also available on the digital cable, DVR it immediately! The details are what makes this from the costumes, to the hairstyles, the props, etc. There was a NYTimes article that reveals they spend roughly 2.5 million on each episode(!?!) and you can see it. Some of the details (the wall and accent colors in the main character's bedroom for example) remind me strongly of my grandparents' house.

The sexism and racism makes me frequently cringe but it is facinating to see all of these people trying to fit into their roles. There is a sense of public restraint even among the most clubby male conversations. Plus the childrearing differences! Child appears covered in a dry-cleaning bag, mother scolds her "if the clothes from that bag are on the floor of my bedroom you are going to get it young lady!" no mention of the bag. Hee.

And I want the clothes: the sexy fitted dresses of the slutty red-headed secretary, the full-skirted shirt dresses of the housewife (but not the maternity wear, yuck), the silk robes of the bohemian mistress...

Flight of the Conchords
Eh it's okay, quirky but maybe trying to hard? It's growing on me but I'm not taken with it.

So Nightwatch is definitely available in English? I must purchase these. I have the first two movies and loved Nightwatch, but was disappointed with the ending of Daywatch.

Yes they're all in English. I haven't seen the movies.
