I totally agree with this. I really am impressed by folks who speak a number of languages. Perhaps because despite my best attempts I can't actually speak anything but English. And gibberish, I can speak that. ;-)
No, I passably *read* English, French, German, and Italian (art historians don't have to talk). I can speak some French, German, and my best would be Italian (excluding of course English which I'm fluent in), and I read and speak a little Croatian.
