Busy week, quiet weekend. Friday I reported at the faculty meeting on which candidate for the contemporary position the grad. students liked the best. Now I have a ton of work to do over break.

The last couple days I have been reading Idols of Perversity. A recommended book for my symbolism class. It's good but depressing (women clearly always have sex with bulls, goats, snakes, and swans, train their dogs to perform oral sex and want to be raped by animals and/or men.) Glad I wasn't born a century earlier.
Last night we saw Thirteen on HBO. It was excellent, but also disturbing. I related both the girl (although I was so uncool in junior high, I was her uncool old friend who did the science project) but also to the mom although we don't have kids. (I just kept hoping the mom wouldn't fall off the wagon thoughout the movie, although that's not why I related to her. The acting was excellent.)

I liked how in Thirteen the mom wasn't ever made out to be some oppressive, overprotective generic bad-guy like parents in these things can easily be made out to be (this is all the more impressive given that the screenplay was by a 13-year-old and not a parent). The mom was actually pretty cool and open-minded, a lot of things considered. She seemed to realize that she wasn't always a saint either, and I definitely could understand how she was freaking out and not knowing what she should do about it.

I think the most disturbing scene for me was: "No bra... No panties... No bra! No panties!"

yeah, I was also impressed that the mom was a real character with her own issues (boyfriend, ex-husband, clients, etc). She was really cool, Denis and I both said that about 20 min. into the movie any kid of ours who acted like that would have been grounded. The dad was also more sympathetic then he could have been. He cared, but was just out of the loop.

"no bra..no panties..." was really disturbing although I was also worried when she was wandering around the street looking for Evie with random guy drinking random stuff from his bottle, and the "let's have a three-some with your hot neighbor" scene. It was good to see a sane male character who refused to be seduced.
