I've never really drank consistently in my life except for the time I spent in Italy, while I was there I really enjoyed the glass or two of wine for lunch and dinner, but I never continued the habit back home. In college I would drink a couple times a term (usually at wine and cheese and the Amarna party) and it was no problem. I don't think I've gotten really drunk since my bacherlorette party, but I drank during our trip to NY in June and it wasn't a problem.

Two weekends ago we went to a party and I had four drinks, three hard ciders and a very weak rum-and-coke. I was pleasantly drunk and went to bed around 1am (early). I woke up at 6:30am (earlier then I usually get up) feeling horribly nauseous. I graded papers until 8:30am and then tried to go back to bed, but the minute I laid down I felt worse. So I stayed up all Sunday looking and feeling horrible. It was beyond just dehyration, plenty of water and some pain reliever got rid of the headache, but my stomach was severely disturbed. ???

Then last Wednesday our manager at Agora treated us to dinner, I had one vodka tonic and felt horribly sick Thursday (that might also have been the food?). Even this weekend I had a cider Sat. night and Sunday felt nauseous (although I was also trying to read in the car, so that might have contributed, I was fine when we weren't driving). Am I that old already, come on. What is up with my body? Maybe it can't deal with alcohol in times of stress? I have been having a hard time sleeping recently (my heart races and I can't calm down, thanks Denis for the backrubs) and I know I've been experiencing academic stress physically, but it irritates me when I can't even have a single drink. That being said, I had a good time at all of the places where I had the aforementioned drinks.

I certainly find that my stomach, which usually is pretty hardy, does not deal well it all with things when I'm really stressed out. Foods that don't normally upset my stomach make it twist and turn when I have a lot of anxiety. Maybe that has something to do with it, especially if the upset stomach hit you harder than the hangover?

I hope that there are calmer times ahead so that you can relax some!

On a separate note on the subject of drinking and tolerances post-college, I've definitely noticed that my tolerance has gone down significantly, especially for certain types of drinks. I guess it's all what your body is used to. I don't drink all that many mixed drinks anymore, whereas I used to do that more often and in greater quantity, especially during Amarna parties. Then again, now I drink much more wine than I used to. Not a lot, mind you - since Erin doesn't drink I typically don't want to open a whole bottle of wine for myself on a weeknight. But in college I really only drank wine once a term at Wine & Cheese, and now I drink more often at restaurants and whenever my parents are offering (good to take advantage of their superior wine knowledge/collection). Anyhow, the point is that it used to be that 3 glasses of wine hit me as hard as six shots of vodka. Now it's reversed.
