We went camping this weekend with [livejournal.com profile] durdge and Jem. It was my first time camping without my family, I camped a lot as a kid and it's very nostalgic for me. D. and I have been talking about buying camping stuff for a few years now but only just recently got around to doing it (thanks stimulus check).

We headed to a private campground near Rehoboth, Delaware Friday night. We successfully set up our new tent (for the first time) in the dark. I woke up early Saturday morning (curse you sunlight) and had a quiet time showering (with a few mosquitos, gross, but hey camping) and reading. We made pancakes for breakfast and then drove into town to rent [livejournal.com profile] durdge and Jem bikes. We had brought ours, but our car rack only fit 3 so they said they'd rent. The bike rental guy was really nice and they got lovely bikes with baskets. Back at the campsite the guys made falafel and we had that and hummus for lunch.

After lunch we took a leisurely bike ride to the ocean. We went through forest, field, marsh, and housing development. I got attacked by some vicious flies (seriously, biting flies hurt) but [livejournal.com profile] durdge lent me his shirt to tie around one leg and that helped considerably. Once at the beach we cooled off in the shade and decided not to go down the boardwalk since it was very crowded. The ride back was nice also. We stopped on a bridge for a while to watch some birds snatch fish from the water below. We also bought lemonade from a kid's roadside stand. She was raising money for a local homeless shelter (impressive kid!).

We were pretty hot once we got back to the campsite so we headed to the campground pool. It was crowded but fun. We swam then read (and napped) poolside. We really need to get some lawnchairs for the campsite. We made a fire, chopped vegetables, and cooked foil dinners. They were really yummy. Then we had s'mores which were delicious, even though my marshmallow roasting skills have languished over the years.

Unfortunately the whole weekend was really hot and sweat-while-you-just-sit-in-the-shade humid. This made it hard to sleep and hanging out by the campfire less desirable, but we managed.

After s'mores we went and played shuffleboard. It was new to D. and I but [livejournal.com profile] durdge and Jem are big fans. It was fun (a little like warm-weather curling) but I was getting tired (see waking up early) so we headed to bed.

Sunday we got up, packed, and had some oatmeal for breakfast. Then we headed to Rehoboth to hang out on the beach. Well D. didn't feel like getting sandy so he hung out on the boardwalk. We sunbathed, chatted, and went into the ocean briefly. Then we wandered around the boardwalk a little, had lunch in a sandwich shop, chatted with a local about rollercoasters, bought a bunch of summer beach food for dessert (fries, taffy, icecream), and slowly made our way back to the car.

D. drove us home, I fell asleep a couple of times. It was an incredibly relaxing weekend, very nicely paced, and spent with good friends. I hope to do it again some time, but maybe somewhere a little cooler :)

Pictures later if I get around to it.

ETA Pictures here.

Sounds wonderful! I love the sign with the creepy horror hand. Dan and I got a tent as a wedding present from my accountant and four years later, we still haven't used it! Part of the problem is the tent is all we have, so camping would entail buying pads and sleeping bags, too. I wanted to go this year, but since we just found out we have another wedding to go to (in Germany!) all of our fun budget is pretty much gone for quite some time.

On a totally unrelated note, do you get a cardio workout from belly dancing? I want to try it but I'm trying to figure out what gym class to pair it with.

Yes we just bought a tent, one sleeping bag (we had one already), and two pads. Luckily our friends had other things: lantern, camp stove, cooler, etc. I think we're going to have lots of things for the Christmas list this year :)

I don't count bellydance as a cardio workout. Usually at the end I'm sweaty, but your heartrate doesn't stay elevated the whole class. It's closer to strength training, but it really depends on your instructor. I'm really sore after my tribal class (lots of squats, glute isolations, and/or shoulder work) but less so after some of my cabaret classes.

Hmm... I still want to try it at some point, but I'm really looking to boost my cardio at this point. Maybe I should try a different type of dancing. Right now I'm doing a full Nautilus circuit followed by an hour of deep-water aerobics three times a week. The water aerobics aren't that aerobic, though - I find it's more of a conditioning class.

We have one pad, but I think it's in my mom's basement. We also have a cooler and some folding chairs, but that's it. I think Christmas is a good idea - maybe that's what we'll buy ourselves. I really hope next summer isn't as crazy travel-wise for us because I'd really like to go camping in New Hampshire and Vermont and on the Cape.

Oh, *camping*. Man I haven't gone since I was a kid, either, and I used to love it. Your post makes me nostalgic. Yay, I'm glad you guys had such a great time!
