Woo! I had my defense today and they passed me! That means that I am officially admitted to candidacy and am ABD (all but dissertation)!

This changes my official status and means I can apply for many more grants, and could potentially teach. (Also I should get paid more for working for the department.) The only thing I have left to pass is my dissertation defense to get my PhD (well I have to write the thing first, but you get my drift.)

The defense was fairly informal. I brought images and some loose notes. My 10-15 minute review lasted closer to 30 but it was fine. Their questions and suggestions were all very sensible and some were extremely helpful. The whole thing lasted a little over an hour, and I only had to wait for a few minutes in the hall before they called me back in.

Also my title seems to be okay:
"Bordering on the Avant-Garde: Modernist Journals from Yugoslavia, Romania, and Bulgaria"
No one said anything so I'm sticking with it. Go undetected fannish reference!

D. and I went to dinner at Notti Bianche. I had some very good antipasti (including their excellent in house boar carpaccio which I've had before and love love love), some very good pasta with panchetta and spring fava beans, and the happiest dessert ever! It was four deep fried risotto balls (lightly crunchy on the outside, very creamy on the inside) in citrus sauce with fresh strawberries and little bits of candied orange. It was delicious little balls all orange and pink and happy. So cute and festive and omg yummy!

Wednesday morning I'm getting on a train to VA Beach for my sister's wedding this weekend. Internet access may be sketchy so if you need to reach me call or contact D.

Yay! Congratulations! The worst is over! (at least, that's what I hear about the process) Also, that sounds like a yummy dinner, although whenever I see 'antipasti' I here a made up jingle in my head - 'rice, the anti-pasta' (substituting your starch of choice).
