Woo! I had my defense today and they passed me! That means that I am officially admitted to candidacy and am ABD (all but dissertation)!

This changes my official status and means I can apply for many more grants, and could potentially teach. (Also I should get paid more for working for the department.) The only thing I have left to pass is my dissertation defense to get my PhD (well I have to write the thing first, but you get my drift.)

The defense was fairly informal. I brought images and some loose notes. My 10-15 minute review lasted closer to 30 but it was fine. Their questions and suggestions were all very sensible and some were extremely helpful. The whole thing lasted a little over an hour, and I only had to wait for a few minutes in the hall before they called me back in.

Also my title seems to be okay:
"Bordering on the Avant-Garde: Modernist Journals from Yugoslavia, Romania, and Bulgaria"
No one said anything so I'm sticking with it. Go undetected fannish reference!

D. and I went to dinner at Notti Bianche. I had some very good antipasti (including their excellent in house boar carpaccio which I've had before and love love love), some very good pasta with panchetta and spring fava beans, and the happiest dessert ever! It was four deep fried risotto balls (lightly crunchy on the outside, very creamy on the inside) in citrus sauce with fresh strawberries and little bits of candied orange. It was delicious little balls all orange and pink and happy. So cute and festive and omg yummy!

Wednesday morning I'm getting on a train to VA Beach for my sister's wedding this weekend. Internet access may be sketchy so if you need to reach me call or contact D.
Busy busy weekend cut-tagged for your convenience.

Friday night D. and I went to see Iron Man.

Non-to-very-mildly-spoilery thoughts )

Saturday I decided to drive to New Haven.

Back in 2004 I interned for a curator at WCMA who was working on a show about Gerald and Sarah Murphy. They were a wealthy American couple who entertained a lot of famous artists and authors in France during the 20s (think Hemingway, the Picassos, Dos Passos, Dorothy Parker, Fernand Leger, the Fitzgeralds). They inspired characters (the Divers in Tender is the Night) and created a social convivial atmosphere that seemed incredibly awesome (until they lost a bunch of money in '29 and their 2 sons died). Gerald was a modern painter (imagine Picasso giving you painting tips) and his 7 surviving canvases were brought together for this show.

The exhibition opened last fall in Williamstown. I missed it, but I knew it was coming to Yale this spring before going to Dallas this summer. Well Sunday was its last day at Yale and since it seemed unlikely I'd make it to Dallas I decided to drive up to New Haven.

some lists of awesome things )

Unrelated, but also I've been watching Angel (for the first time) the last few months. Condensed thoughts )

Misc. awesome things:
-met with my adviser today, his notes on my latest dissertation proposal draft were more editing than anything else so I should be able to turn the final into my committee tomorrow
-finally have my proposal defense schedule (with a room and a projector and everything) for next week
-found a fellowship to apply for to study in Romania next spring (cross your fingers for me)
-making enchiladas for the first time, smells good so far, we'll see
-going to MCR concert in Philly tomorrow with [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf and friends!!
-bellydance class tonight
I turned in a draft of my dissertation proposal to my adviser on Wednesday. It was still very much a draft but at least I had some of my ideas down in written form. (It's much later than I hoped to have it done, but still okay since my ultimate goal is to have it finished by the end of the semester.)

In response to this news my dad wrote:

Hi Amelia,

Glad that you've been having a good week. Wednesday night I drove over to Vt and yesterday was a nice spring, sunny, and wam day in the field looking at an old penstock that is scheduled to be replaced this summer. Remember the one Thanksgiving when you went with me to a hydrosite and helped by survey a penstock ? You must have been about 8th grade or so. I still have a picure of you standing in front of the powerhouse.

Glad that you turned in your thesis draft. Even if Dr Mansbach rips it apart with comments its a good step forward.

See you in a few weeks.

love,
dad

So very much like him, erring on the side of honesty rather than tact :)

My adviser responded with the following:

Friday

Dear Amelia,
Yesterday en route to NYC, I went over your proposal. It is basically quite good; but I think we need to work over a few things (all easy to address). Therefore, we can either meet this coming week, say on Tuesday afternoon. Or I can telephone you and by phone we can go over matters. If the latter, do let me know how best to reach you (and a few "time" options).

Best,
[name title etc]

Heartening yes? No "major revisions" or "reevaluate your concept". Hopefully we will meet on Tuesday, set a date for the proposal defense within a week or two and keep moving.
