BSG

Public Service Annoucement: BSG is coming back Friday April 4th.

(And thank goodness since there's no more The Wire. I love both shows for very similar reasons, the deep humanity of them, the interplay between individuals and systems--political, legal, religious, military, the street, etc--, the question of personal morality as well as what is for "the public good", a deep sense of place, an unflinching respect for the constancy of human lives despite the circumstances, an examination of what it takes to survive in different environments, and a questioning of the barriers and divisions--the categories we use to define ourselves and prop ourselves up as different from "them". Also, people aren't dumb, they're flawed in complex, human ways. The Wire is quite pessimistic, seeing all these things as cyclical, as repeating due to the structures of institutions that are self-perpetuating, demanding rather than serving the goals of the individuals within them. BSG is much more optimistic and much more linear, there's a crisis, a mission, an ultimate goal. There is space for heroism, space that's mostly absent in The Wire. Also, more explosions and sex. But really there's a lot of the same shit in space.)

It's been a while so the sci fi channel has this great snarky recap starting from the beginning of the series called What the Frack is going on?. Highly recommended.
