I haven't really been posting a lot recently. Things are pretty good. My African Art class is going well. Some of my students are really smart others less so (example: I'm showing an Eygptian work with three figures, one male, two female. They are: the pharoah Menkaure, goddess Hathor, and a Nome--a figure representing an area of Egypt. One student "doesn't get it it". Why? "Is is called Nome because it's short?" "What?" "Because nomes are small people." "No, that's gnome with a g." (trying not to smirk, I'm the teacher, the teacher, must.not.taunt.students.).

Another grad. student observed me last night. Since it's my first class I wanted some objective feedback on my lecture style (am I making sense or do they have blank looks for some other reason?). His evaluation was mostly positive although he did say I was mean for making them memorize medium and date. God forbid they know what the item is made out of and when it was produced.

Reading for comps is going. Slowly, but progressing and that's considerably better than last year.

I've done a couple DC Ravenchase hunts recently and they have rocked! I'm really looking forward to the upcoming hunt in Annapolis and the Halloween one in Richmond! (also curling soon, yay!)

Tonight we ordered Chinese food and are watching random things on tv. Did you know that Alan Rickman was the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood Price of Theives? This movie came out when I was in early middle school and had a big effect. The cheesy factor on the rewatch is awesome.

Oh, wondering about the subject line? Denis found this. I think number 1 merits a WTF?

Did we know that Alan Rickman was ...

[brisk head-clearing head-shake]

You know, after my temp's declaration that he doesn't make a good villain before the first Harry Potter movie, and then [livejournal.com profile] fafou's "What else has he been in" moment following OotP, and now this, I think I'm just going to have to decide not to be surprised by anything anyone says about Alan Rickman anymore, ever.

We discovered the Tanuki thing when trying to figure out exactly what Tom Nook, the shopkeeper in Animal Crossing, was. I'm so glad he just lazily stood there and sold flowers and shovels and furniture and other pleasant things and didn't beat us senseless with his scrotum.

Also, I do believe the 'raccoon suit' in Super Mario Bros. 3 is actually a Tanuki.

Glad that things are going so well for you!

Yes. It was quite the hit at one of my piano camps, and...

The cheesy factor on the rewatch is awesome.

It was halfway through my first rewatch that I suddenly burst out laughing. That's when I realized that Kevin Costner was trying to speak with an English accent.

You are so not mean for making them memorize medium and date. What is wrong with that other grad student?
