My parents had a nice visit this weekend. Thursday we took them curling. My mom was nervous about it, but they both did fine. They shared lead position in the game. My dad fell a couple of times, but he wasn't hurt. They both agreed it was harder and more interesting than it looks. Friday we didn't see too much of them since we had work/school and curling. We sent them to a local mexican place for dinner.
Saturday we went to see the cherry blossom parade even though it was pouring rain and windy. We saw a little of the parade and the Signers of the Declaration of Independence memorial before finding shelter in the Freer-Sackler. Sadly the wind blew away most of the cherry blossoms. The highlight was a free performance at the Freer by Kenny Endo. He blends traditional Japanese drumming with western percussion traditions such as jazz. It was phenomenal. One piece even included traditional Japanese dancing by the cherry blossom festival's cultural director.
Then we crossed the mall to the museum of Natural History for lunch where we met up with my friend Rinna. R. had just finished half her comps and needed some time downtown. We briefly toured the new-ish hall of mammals and then went to the NGA to see the Cezanne exhibit.
My parents generously invited R. to our evening activities so we headed home (we took a taxi, it was so nice) to change clothes. We saw a condensed version of the Mikado at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on 13th and H St. NE and then went out to a snazzy (and expensive) Italian restaurant downtown. We all had cocktails and a couple bottles of wine so my dad and uncle were a little tipsy. Everyone was great to R. and I'm glad she came. She was good company and needed a little TLC after 3 months of solitude reading in College Park.
Sunday my dad and uncle went on a hike, D. played computer, and my mom and I spent the afternoon together. We went out for Ethiopian (which my mom liked! It went over much better than the Indian food we tried last visit.) Then we went shopping in Georgetown. My mom bought handcream for herself and sandals for me and I got some new pjs. We went home and she sewed liners onto my curtains (they are so great, it's no longer 100 degrees in our apartment in the afternoon). We watched a little Angel then with D. went to my uncle's house for dinner. He made my great-grandmother's famous sauerkraut pie as an appetizer (there are only two ingredients sauerkraut and flour), but we had chicken for dinner. They flew out Monday morning.
It was a very nice visit. They stayed with us the first couple nights and then with my uncle so it was a good balance of visiting and privacy. Friday morning I even got up early and made blueberry lime crepes before I headed off to school.
