Denis and I played in our first bonspiel (curling tournament) this weekend, the Big Spiel. It was awesome.

Our first game was Thursday night and we lost by *one* point. We greatly missed playing with [livejournal.com profile] eolianbeck. Thursday Pam subbed for her. Saturday morning our 9am game was tied at the sixth end (round, we normally play 8), then we blanked the seventh (no one scored), then we lost again by one point in the eigth. Grrrr. We ate lunch and hung out for a while, I graded a few papers. Our 4:30 game tied and went to a ninth end and we *won* by one point. Yay! (Although this was a hard call because it was dinner time and everyone else was in the warm room eating yummy food and around the 6th end I really wanted to do that too.) Then we had our yummy food and traded a bottle of shiraz for some Williams Sonoma Eggnog waffle-mix. (Looks yummy, pretty tin.) Then tired, but rarin' to go we played at 9pm. It was pretty close, we were one behind going into the eighth end and then they won 2-3 points. I felt like I improved my game. Neil (our wonderful skip) kept repeatedly calling center guards, and by the last couple games I was actually throwing them (or sometimes burying things on the side in the 8ft., but at least they were in the house). I even threw a take-out (rock hits another rock out-of-bounds)! The best compliment was that the last team we played (who beat us) were going to the finals this morning and their lead couldn't make it and they weren't sure if they would hear from their sub so they asked me to do it because they were impressed how well I did : ) (Their sub ended up calling and I was happy to sleep in this morning.)

Of course the best part of curling is the people. I'm really glad that we had such a good time despite the fact that none of our friends were there (we missed you all, get better soon). This is mostly due to [livejournal.com profile] flt who subbed for us all day Saturday (she played *four* games, 31 ends, most of them front-end). She is very helpful instructor and even more fabulous company. When we were getting tired and sore she helped keep everyone upbeat. Denis and I slept for almost 12 hours and we are doing okay this morning. I'm a little sore, but with stretching and maybe a walk or easy run I should be okay. Denis fell yesterday so he's pretty sore but unbruised. Yay curling, yay bonspiels! (If anyone is playing any more of them and wants a lead please let me know.)

I can't say I understood everything in this post, but it all sounds fun! It's cool that you and Denis have such a social activity to both do together - it sounds like all of the people are super-cool...
