My first day TAing section this semester went pretty well despite my nervousness. We introduced ourselves, went over the syllabus and then did an exercise where they paired up and one had to look at a painting and describe it to the other while the second drew it. It was meant to show how difficult it is to describe art using words (something they need to do for their papers), and to get them up and talking. Then we looked at a Benin mask and tried to describe it and see what information we could learn visually. Many of them participated, it went well. I'm feeling pretty good about Monday's class.

sanj and Melissa went well. I got a good start on a fall wardrobe: a couple of dress-shirts, two pairs of pants, two sweaters, a skirt, a pair of jeans, a belt, and black heels. Everything I picked they rejected, but the things they found I liked. (I like pretty colors and fabrics, but don't pay enough attention to shape, blech.) I looked great for teaching. I figured since I don't know much about African art I should at least dress like I do. I wore pinstripe black pants, a blank tank and a white jacket.
I had a great lunch with my mentee in the dept. She's a 1st year PhD so she doesn't need much mentoring, but she's really nice so I hope we'll become friends. She also lives a couple blocks from me so we're going to carpool in together a couple days a week. (Company and gas money, yay!)
Yesterday I went to a new hairdresser. More expensive then what I'm used to doing, but he's really good. I enjoyed chatting, and I really like my new haircut. He did a few things that bode well. 1. He told me exactly what he was going to do before he did it. 2. He got the right color of red I wanted even though I'm bad at explaning it. 3. He wanted to update my boring bob (something I knew) and knew how to do that (something I didn't know). 4. He asked me if I spend time on my hair in the morning, and when I said no, said he we would give me something that would look good wash and wear. 5. He asked me who was doing my eyebrows (me) and immediately introduced me to Sarah the eyebrow woman, who gave me a gentle reminder about overplucking the right one, and made my eyebrows look great. 6. He colored my eyebrows just a little so they coordinate with (but don't match) my hair. 7. He got me water and a magazine while I was waiting for my color. (It takes so little to impress me.)
The haircut was even more expensive because I got a huge parking ticket (ooops). But I think it was worth it.

One salon I went to here in the UK offered me red or white wine; another gave me the choice of espresso or italian hot chocolate, both with little chocolate biscuits. The former gave me the crappiest haircut I've had here, and latter the best, so I don't know what it all means!
