Hi local people. If you were going to leisurely browse desperately look for jewelry for my sister in a real store (not online, sanj has moved, I'm at a loss), where might you go? I want something a little more special than the mall (which I went to today and it was like the 4th circle of hell). Any local artist/crafty places you'd like to recommend? Thank you.

appalachian spring is on the higher end, but has a pretty broad range of styles and prices. (i wouldn't really judge their selection by their website, at least by comparison to their reston store.)

artcraft has funkier jewelry -- the website has a pretty good feel for it, i think -- but i don't know how good those locations are for you....

You could try the Pyramid Art store in DTSS? They seem to move around a lot but I think they were on Ellsworth not long ago. I haven't been in in a while but they might have jewelry. Also, there are a couple of upscale handmade stores in Bethesda that you could try, like the one that's in the downtown area (no idea what street, but it's close to the Barnes and Noble), and one with an unpronounceable name in one of the strip malls--I think it had a lot of Xs and Ys.

The Holiday Market is still going on downtown. There's a fair number of jewelry artisans there that range from cheap and loud to expensive and delicate.
