The first part of Ken Burns's new documentary "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" is on PBS today. I just saw it, and would recommend.

We went camping this weekend with durdge and Jem at Shenandoah National Park. We arrived Friday night, it was cool, but fine. We woke up Saturday to gray skies and rain. We made brunch on the camp stove in the rain, then tried for a scenic drive, but the fog was too thick to see anything. We took a short, wet, hike to a waterfall and then retired to the lodge. Drying out by the fire we played cards, ate blackberry desserts, and drank blackberry wine. The rain was heavier, and only getting worse so instead of spending another cold, wet night, we quickly took down the tents and headed back early. We made it to durdge and Jem's around 9:30 and made s'mores and doughboys in their fireplace. It was too bad to miss out on the beautiful scenery (although the fog was very atmospheric), but we had a nice time, and it was good to sleep in my own bed.
