I've been neglecting my livejournal a bit, but here's a quick update from the last few days. We had a quiet weekend, the first one at home in a while. Denis had to work both Saturday and Sunday and the weather was horrible. Saturday morning we helped our upstairs neighbor move out, several of her friends bailed on her at the last minute and she came knocking on our door at 10:30 Friday night asking for Denis's help and offering to pay him. We both helped for a little bit, she gave us a bottle of wine and offered to take us out to dinner later, I'm really more interested in upping our moving karma or next year's going to be horrible. Then I got a bad headache/migraine? Saturday afternoon, then some unpleasant digestive tract thing Saturday night. Sunday I felt better and cleaned the apartment, Denis cooked tarragon chicken (thanks
coffman for the recipe) which is really good although Denis realizes that he doesn't really like tarragon, more leftovers for me.
Monday I biked home from work for the first time. It took me a long time (45 minutes), but I went really slowly. (Thanks
mylene2k, your tips were very helpful!) Still got home earlier than I would if I waited for the bus. The first half is mostly downhill so I coast and there is only one medium hill and one horrible big my-legs-hurt hill at the end. I only "fell" (got off the bike without meaning or wanting to) once trying to avoid a mailbox. Most people were nice (except for one guy who would not move, I biked on the sidewalk when the traffic was bad and the road was narrow), and one crazy driving lady. My legs don't ache this morning, so that's a good sign.
I also met with the college's Fullbright contact about applying for a Fullbright this fall for next year. He was cautiously optimstic and said it would be worth my time to apply but I need to start working now, any language skills I gain would be especially helpful. Croatia does have a relativly low acceptance rate (just under 18%, but who knows the quality of the applicants who applied last year, and they probably don't get many humanities people.) I plan also apply to grad. programs, good to have a backup and I can always defer (or if they don't let me do that reapply the following year).
