I had a fantastic time at MJ this weekend. Drove up Thursday night with road-trippers and roommates extraordinaire [livejournal.com profile] wordplay, [livejournal.com profile] sanj, and [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon. We had excellent luck with traffic both ways and there was music-pimpage and good conversation and chocolate.

awesome people
[livejournal.com profile] bayleaf, [livejournal.com profile] aerye, [livejournal.com profile] treewishes, [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw, [livejournal.com profile] lightgetsin, [livejournal.com profile] the_shoshanna, [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel, [livejournal.com profile] slinkling, [livejournal.com profile] pharis, and [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek

Friday
Friday I was up early for the volunteer meeting, breakfasted in the hotel, then spent the day at panels and volunteering. Oh and a bunch (8) of us went out to lunch at Legal Seafood. Dinner was chinese delivery (thank you [livejournal.com profile] sanj for acquiring utensils!), then we got dressed for the vid show and dance party.

The vid show was awesome! Just a few examples of awesome (there were more!) included [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel's premiere of Skullcrusher Mountain (Lost), No Handlebars by [livejournal.com profile] flummery (Dr. Who), and Half Acre by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro and [livejournal.com profile] jarrow (Six Feet Under) that made me cry during the show and then when I rewatched it at home.

The dance party was also awesome (are you sensing a theme!) despite some technical difficulties. Notable outfits included [livejournal.com profile] aerye's sparkly pink dress, [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf's matching sparkly pink shoes, and [livejournal.com profile] dira_sudis's schoolgirl look. My shoes were better than expected dancing-wise, and it was super fun to see all the bandom people get excited over certain songs. Ending with "Eye of the Tiger" (interpretive Dean-inspired dance included) was a good choice. We finished the night hanging out in room 2010.

Saturday
Saturday again felt early. I went to some panels, had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] slinkling, and then more panels. At some point we went and watched the most recent SPN (OMGWTF?), wait I think that was Friday? whatever. There was also a lot of lovely jewelry this weekend. I bought a beautiful necklace and earring set from [livejournal.com profile] slinkling, I won a pretty necklace at the raffle which I wore to work on Monday, and [livejournal.com profile] sanj was around making nifty beaded things too.

I had dinner with a bunch of people at California Pizza Kitchen. Then we got dressed for Jacques (never put eyeliner on so fast in my life).

Jacques was tremendous. We broke the drag queens a little. They asked how the group was related and received the response "women who like porn" with lots of cheering. Then she tried to figure out if we were porn stars (uh no). So they moved on to birthday girls and bachelorettes. They loved us though because were cheered and yelled and tipped (and drank?) a lot. It was lots of fun, great energy.

Finished Saturday night back in 2010, only with more alcohol, and outside in the hallway (hi neighbors!), and in 2012. Succeeded in my goal of "drunk but not too drunk".

Sunday
There wasn't an official dead dog panel Sunday, but we had our own mini-one over brunch Sunday morning. Then off to the minivan for the drive home.

Panels
Panels I attended throughout the weekend with minimal comments as I didn't take notes. Mostly I went to squee-filled panels and they delivered.

Mutual of Omaha!: The Middlepanel
-there was lots of squee, and also discussion about why we like the show (characters treated with respect, friendship valued at or above romantic relationships, women who have sex and aren't punished)

The Linguistics of Fandom
-other people said smart things but we may have bored the actual linguists. Determined the original source of squick (ick!).

Leverage: Insert Own Fulcrum Joke Here
-one of my favorites this weekend, good 9am activities (prizes! chocolate!). Hardison \o/ but we didn't get to Christian Kane's hair. Prompted my joining [livejournal.com profile] the_rewatch_job even though it's going to conflict with dance class

Making it New and Making it Last (aka: Hello, it's been fifteen years since they aired the Due South pilot! And Fraser? Still delicious!)
-I don't remember much of the specifics other than just being in awe of all the devoted fangirls. Also, it was interesting to hear about the shift on to lj, and we touched on the different ways people use lj

"I Know There's Better Brothers, But You're The Only One That's Mine" (Supernatural)
-much squee about brotherlyness, why Dean is a righteous man and why Sam is just like his daddy. This was a great panel in that it stayed on topic (yay mods!), was full of squee even though it could have been a panel about significant issues many people have with the show (but it wasn't that panel), also stayed pretty clear of the Wincest until someone mentioned that (in gratitude) and then of course that's the subject that came up

High School, College Professors (and College), Dancing, Pilots, and Artists: Alternate Universes and Why We Love Them!
-it was fun to list the different AUs and why we gravitate towards some of them (kinks! and we might know what we're talking about better), this one was interesting enough that it could have gone on longer, someone who's lj name didn't stick (sorry!) will hopefully write an awesome story about Jack and the Torchwood crew as greek gods.

TPTB: Seriously, They're Just Pandering To Us At This Point (Merlin)
-Merlin squee! the gayest show ever and the Brits don't mind (and we're all criminals), Gwen needs more script love. The followup to this panel for me was listening to Merlin commentaries in the car on the way home (fun!, thanks [livejournal.com profile] wordplay, sorry [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon)

In short I had a great time at my 2nd con ever. It was well run, I really enjoyed the squee-filled atmosphere, and definitely felt the love. Can't wait until 2011!
