paper pet peeve

I am banning the word "unique" from my undergraduates' papers. What are you trying to tell me? Is the painting interesting to look at? important in the artist's oeuvre? colorful? just damn neat? Please write that you're trying to say something because telling me that no one ever painted a painting exactly like this one is really not saying anything at all. I told them that if they couldn't find a better adjective to use then they probably don't have a point and should beware. Woe to the student that begins their final draft with "Painting A and Painting B are both so unique."
