Saturday:
Woke up on two hours of sleep because we had a field trip! We got on a small-ish boat to tour Kornati National Park which is actually a collection of small islands. The boat was supposed to hold 150 people, but we ended up on a boat that held 20. We were all a little irritable so in the morning retreated to different tables to listen to ipods, nap uncomfortably, and look at the view.
"Breakfast" on the boat was some horrid juice, hard candy and cookies(?), shots of rakija (I passed) and beer (also passed). They had no cold water initially which was a problem for 4 sleep deprived hung over American girls. It was very pretty though and thank goodness for the ipod so I didn't have to talk to anyone and inflict my bitchiness upon them (another 1000 hugs for uschickens and her playlist).
The islands were very pretty in a kind of perhistoric way. You can see all these layers of rock sticking up at strange angles with bits of bush interspersed and it's all very deserted. Strange and lovely. After 3 hours on the boat (much too long, but they did give us sandwiches around 11 which helped my stomach considerably) we stopped at one of the larger islands. We went swimming in a very warm salt lake that was surrounded by wild donkeys (I have some pics will post later). Then took a much more refreshing dip in the sea.
Lunch was on the boat at 2pm, fish, salad, bread, and wine. Just what we needed. They 2-3 hours back made longer by a half hour unplanned stop at another island. I was a little crabby about the delay but we got icecream so that helped considerably.
Went home, showered, changed into my new black and white wrap dress, and got dolled up to meet Željko. You remember the guys from last weekend? From Zagoria? Well Jill spent the entire week texting and calling Željko (geeky electrical engineer) and Ivan (cute one) and Željko came on Saturday night to see her. We got him a hotel room near our place. My money was on him, but Jill's not attracted to him at all. We'll see what happens with Ivan who thinks they're getting married and living on his vineyard with his mother.
Jill, Željko and I went out to dinner at Restaurant Zadar right on the water. Then got a drink at restaurant with cute waiter (which was a little awkward for Jill esp. when he asked her to meet him later and she really wanted to, but couldn't say that because Željko was there.) Also met the English trio there again. And proceeded back to The Garden.
We sat at a big marble table with marble stools. Had to smoosh in. We ended up being joined by Davor and Albert and slightly later by Yuki and Tony. And we made friends with some English guys at the other end of the table. It was a nice mix of people from the program, from Harvard/LSE, Želkjo from Zagoria, Davor, Bertie, and Tony (although I find Tony really annoying). Conversation was nice. I didn't really drink very much but took some pictures which I'll probably get around to posting in August.
Party broke up around 3pm. I wasn't tired (not sure how this is possible) so ended up walking forever with Bertie and Davor to their friend Ivan's apartment. This was much farther away than I anticipated, when I left there was a rooster crowing so I think we were at the edge of town. Some weed was smoked and around 4:30, feeling considerably more sleepy Bertie walked me to Interspar where I could find my way home.
In bed by 5 again although this time slept in.
Sunday:
Woke up in the early afternoon. Called Jill and met her and Željko for lunch at Pet Bunara. Spent the afternoon walking around the city with a brief, cool, interlude at Arsonal. It was brutally hot and I had gotten badly sunburned on Saturday during our excursion. I actually went upstairs and looked at the art for the first time. Dropped Željko off at the bus station. One of the best weekends of his life, even though nothing happened with Jill. Hopefully we can go up and see him in his village next week. He lives relatively close to Zagreb.
Went home showered and had cereal for dinner. Jill was meeting English trio at Fosa (expensive fish restaurant) and Becca, Nick, and Ellen were going out to dinner at Arsonal. I took my time, walked down to the city, had a coke at a cafe and chilled by myself at the sea organ. Met up with everyone at Arsonal. We sat outside because there was some sort of concert going on and we wanted to chat.
So this was five of us from the program (the girls and Nick), Mark, Charlie, and Arber, and a brother and sister (Georgia and Alex) from Australia who are taking a course at the language school and just arrived that evening. It was a nice mix of various accents and vocab and we had a fun time discussing things likes thongs. English trio regaled us with a country song they had been listening too all trip (they started out at a wedding in Budapest and are continuing on to Serbia and Kosovo.) Arber had to look up the reference to "Hatfields and McCoys" (adorable). We eventually ended up at the Garden on one of the "beds".
Got home around 3am, early evening *eye roll*.
Week 7:
Monday:
Our last week! Our exam is on Thrusday and the program ends on Friday. We were all pretty dead during class. I took a nap this afternoon then watched the Dr. Who season finale (I didn't think it was horrible, but not as good as other eps this season, or last season's finale.) and writing this. Have to go get ready for lecture now.
Hope all is well with you!
