I'm starting to loose track of what week I'm on I think I might have skipped a number here and there. Lots happened this week. In class we've been doing normal things as well as playing games (ping poing! cards! boggle!). I need to make some notes before I forget everything.
Mon. It was really hot so after class we went downtown to blessed airconditioned Arsonal, a really cool lounge bar/restaurant/performance space/gallery/etc. We saw a klappa (a capella) concert of traditional Dalmatian music and it was awesome.
Tues.
So hot no one slept and everyone was irritable. I don't think I left the house. We had lecture in the evening and it was not bad though. This would be good because Wednesday's lecture was aweful, although it improved again on Thursday.
Wed.
After lecture we played pong. You probably saw how that went from my earlier posts. I got a little sick (much less fun without someone there to take care of me) but ended up getting up Thurs. morning in time to take a shower, eat breakfast etc. Bless Ellen and her tums. But damn Ellen and her video camera. There is footage of people playing pong while I randomly bellydance in the background, me holding the video camera narrating in a strange English/Croatian mix, talking on the phone with Jill's Želkjo, Becca and Ellen teaching Jill to shotgun a beer, and Jill totally failing and dropping the beer on the front step (what they don't teach thoes Harvard kids), everyone smoking outside, pettinging the stray kittens that we have adopted (Lovac and now Luigi), Yuki randomly picking me up and carrying me to the picnic table, everyone doing Prof. Mamic impressions, etc.
Thursday
Oh the weekend is starting to feel like a blur. I think on Wed. we went to Arsonel for dinner (now my second favorite bar in Zadar after The Garden). I had a delicious steak with mushroom sauce. Then we went for icecream. Everyone was very full.
Friday
Friday and Saturday feel either like one long day or 5 really short days. Let's see in class we had a Boggle tournament. Then hung out in the afternoon and probably napped. Then we had a big fish dinner hosted by Prof. Mamic. The neighbor cooked the fish and it was excellent (random Croatian saying: "fish must swim three times, once in the sea, once in the oil, and once in the wine"). We also met the program director Stephen's Croatian wife and one year old son Adrian (so cute).
Then Jill, Becca, Ellen, and I went out for a girl's night. We started in The Garden. I was sent on a mission to pick up "cute waiter" from the restaurant with cute waiter and nice waiter. Nice waiter wasn't working so I marched in, introduced myself to cute waiter, said that my friend thought he was attractive and that when he got off work he should join us at the Garden for a drink. His name is Denis (hee!). He didn't show Friday, but wanted to meet up Saturday, but we missed him again. Perhaps I can hook him and Jill up this week. The girls decided that I have "balls of gold" (sounds better in Croatian) for doing this. Eh.
Then we switched bars to Lotus which is much more of a dive than the Garden, but still fun. We sat outside in the street. Becca made friends with a table or Croatian men, half of whom were named Davor. Then we ran into our other friends Davor, Bertie, etc. Then Jill ran into her friend Mark from Harvard (but who is really from Luxemburg) and his friends from the London School of Economics, Charlie (from Liverpool, a girl) and Arber (Albanian living in London, a guy). They are awesome and I just adore them.
Around 1? 2? Lotus and all the other bars close. There's only one place to go, the sketchy Maya pub. Of course everyone is there, it's a small town. So us, the English kids, and a couple of the random guys from Lotus (now referred to as Lotus guys) went there. We danced and drank and it was sublime. I really missed dancing. Jill went home early because she was tired. We ran into Davor and Bertie again (really no where else to go) and ended up on the steps outside of Maya Pub chatting. It was fun to see Arbor chat with Bertie in Albanian. English people headed off to their hotel (there are three of them sharing a bed to save money, two boys and a girl and they're getting the most interesting looks. The "bed" is actually two beds pushed together and in order to make everyone equally uncomfortable they are sleeping crossways with the gap down everyone's backs. hee.)
Then me, Ellen, Becca, Davor, Bertie, two random Lotus guys, a guy with really long hair and two girls who I think Davor knew headed to the sea organ. It was around 3am so that means night swimming! So much fun, one of my favorite activities here. I ended up in a damp dress, Ellen's shirt was so wet that she refused to put in on and spend the rest of the evening in her strapless bra (she tried to borrow Davor's shirt but he demanded it back). Ellen and Becca ended up getting walked home by sketchy Lotus guys. I walked what felt like miles to Bertie's car with him, Davor, and Luka who is 17 (groan). He showed me his highschool when we walked by.
Bertie dropped me off at 5am, I took a shower and slept from 5:30-7:30. I think Sat. deserves a new post yes?
