Oh my goodness, class just started. I went from having almost nothing to do to having about a thousand things to do. Including having to apply to get into one class because it's over-subscribed. So she's having us fill out these forms, but I bet that they won't help her pick and choose, so it'll just end up being a lottery. How much does this school cost? Why can't we get into the seminars we want? It's going to be a great class though, Transatlantic Modernism, and the prof. Wanda Corn, seems amazing.

Good luck! Transatlantic Modernism sounds cool. Is it a comparative class, Europe v. America (N. & S. ?)? I miss school.

It's covers 1910-1930 and it looks at Paris and New York and the mutual influence between the two as artists from both traveled across the Atlantic. Her arguments refute the notion that the influence was one sided (the Europeans always teaching and the Americans just following) and the idea of a "silent generation" and focuses on the theory that the French and Americans both viewed each other as "exotic/desirable others" and recognizing this different viewpoint helped American artists to self-consciously create an American modernism. We're using her recently published book "The Great American Thing" which is supposed to be amazing.

I haven't heard the phrase "the silent generation." Is the idea that all the Americans supposedly went over to Paris and so weren't writing in the States, or something like that? I think the title "The Great American Thing" is an awesome title.
