Last night Denis and I finished putting the taxes together and then the internet went out so we went to see Sin City. It was great, I only cringed a couple of times at the violence. Marv was awesome, Bruce Willis was good with what I saw as a-not-overly-complex-good-cop character, and Clive Owen is cute. (I haven't read the books.) It was a little strange watching actors I associate with other characters--took me a while not to see Elijah Wood as psycho-hobbit, and I was surprised to see Ben from Carnivale as evil, but Powers Boothe who plays a cocksucker on Deadwood plays a cocksucker here too. The acting was great (Rosario Dawson was awesome) except for Britney Murphy who irritated me immensely. Only Britney Murphy could overplay a larger-than-life character.

Elijah Wood began to break me of the "Frodo" associations in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His character in Eternal Sunshine isn't nearly as creepy and evil as Kevin, but he's actually pretty creepy in a much more normal, everyday way.

I'm glad he's doing these really different roles. He did a bunch of roles before LOTR, but LOTR was so huge that I'm sure he's conscious of needing to break out of the Frodo mold.

It's funny, the Frodo associations didn't bother me in Eternal Sunshine, but the unreality of Kevin (and something about the eyes) made me think of Frodo when he decided not to throw the ring into Mt. Doom. I agree that all of the actors from LOTR, but Wood most of all have been trying to stay away from similar roles (sometimes more sucessfully than others--see Sean Astin in 50 First Dates.)

I didn't see it, but it seems like Viggo Mortenson didn't get too far away from his grizzled-horse-riding-hero-Aragorn thing when he did Hidalgo. ;-)

How about Orlando Bloom?
Not much difference between an elf and an English seaman.

I still maintain that Tobey Maguire would have been a better choice for Kevin.

I don't think I've ever heard you say 'cocksucker' before. I'm guessing this doesn't mean there's an erotic gay subplot... =op

um, no erotic gay subplot. 'Cocksucker' (oops, I just mistyped it sockcucker) is really only deadwood-related vocabulary rather than something I can say outloud without blushing.

Did he have a tiny mustache in Pirates later on in the movie? That might be a change.
