Where was I? Oh yes, Croatia. We just relived the trip this weekend by going through the pictures (9 rolls of film) several times as different family members arrived.
Dubrovnik was the most beautiful and the most romantic place we stayed. We took the 6am flight out of Zagreb arriving in Dubrovnik in the morning. I always thought the nickname “pearl of the Adriatic” was corny, but when we came around the bend of the mountain and saw the old city, the white walls against the deep blue of the sea it seemed apt.
We stayed in a private home that rented out rooms. My parents, Melissa, and Minka had the upstairs apartment and Denis and I had a private bedroom the floor below. (It was our anniversary so we got the “honeymoon suite.” Each had a balcony that looked out over the sea with a view of the city and a small island. There were cruise ships docked off the coast.
After breakfast and a nap we explored the city a bit. It was lovely and charming with a wide main street that branched off into very narrow steep side streets with lots of steps. We had dinner at one of the numerous cafes whose tables were set up on the street to attract tourists. My dad had mega-shrimp (huge with the heads still on) that freaked my mom and sister out.
The next day we walked around the top of the city walls. Minka stayed below and had a coffee and a cigarette and read the paper. It was really hot and the stairs were a little rough for my mom, but the views were great and occasionally there would be a tower that was nice and cool inside. Afterwards we made a quick stop at the icons museum before lunch and then went to the city of Dubrovnik museum.
Everyone else went back to the hotel for an afternoon nap, but Denis and I went to a small island right off the coast. It was lovely. We walked around the grounds of an old monastery. Then we went swimming in a small, saltwater lake. The water was amazingly clear, and so salty that I could float on my back with my face exposed without moving my arms at all. We laid in the sun for 15 minutes then sat and looked at the sea. Afterwards we took a hike up to the island’s highest point on which there was an old fort. On the way back we got a little lost, but made it in time to catch the boat. That night all of us went back to the main city for dinner and icecream and just enjoyed the city at night.
