Feeling better today. With a little urging for Denis I got up and met him for lunch downtown. It was great to get out and the blue sky and sun helped too. (Of course now it's gray again.) I was in such a good mood when I got home I thought I would actually start paying some attention to the summer language programs in Croatian.
There is one offered by the University of Kansas in Zagreb and Dubrovnik that looks great, but is rather expensive, and you have to be intermediate level (I'm beginner-intermediate, I might be able to do intermediate, but I don't have any official classes, just my private lessons and independent study.) There is another one at the University of Pittsburgh which is also highly recommended, is less expensive, and has financial aid. They do placement tests at the beginning. Right now I'm leaning toward Pitt (did I say financial aid yet) and maybe after that ends (mid-July) I can go hang out with my in-laws for a few weeks in Croatia.
While I was on the web I found a website that is giving awards for language study in Eastern European languages (including Croatian). $2000 for summer 2005!!! Sounds perfect. Too bad the application deadline is January 13th (that would be next Friday) and the recommendation deadline is the 20th. In excited panic I emailed 2 Maryland profs., then called Williams to see who is in Europe and emailed the Williams prof. who is in town. (I need 2 recs.) My advisor emailed me back immediately saying he'd do it (because he's awesome!!!!) and I hope 1 (but not both) of the other two will. Yay language study!
Addendum: Williams prof. just emailed me back saying he'd do the recommendation "early next week (God willing)". Yay! So glad that I went to great programs with wonderful professors!!! So glad for the power of email and the internet!!! Now I have to dig through a bunch of boxes looking for transcripts.
